“I haven’t had extensive experiences with psychedelics, but I’ve had enough to certainly encounter some very dark places,” he says. In the literature, those dark places are referred to as “challenging effects” — i.e., bad trips. He advises people who encounter troubling visions or negative emotions after taking a psychedelic to confront whatever’s upsetting them directly, to realize that it’s only in their minds. “If you see a demon and it’s frightening, you don’t want to run from it, and you don’t want to fight it, because in both cases you reify it,” he says. “You want to be curious about it.”
