The devolved Scottish government’s figures for 2019/20 show that Scotland spent £1633 more per head than the UK average of public spending. But tax revenue, including a share of North Sea oil, was £308 less per head than the UK average.
Scotland’s notional deficit surged by £2 billion to £15 billion. This is the equivalent of 8.6% of GDP – nearly three times the 3% required for EU membership – which would make it impossible for an independent Scotland to join the EU.
A spokeslass for the ruling Scottish National Party denied that the figures showed the fantastic deal Scots get from the Union, and insisted that the “status quo” could not continue.
