A recent CNN "Inside Politics" interview featuring Democratic Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman speaking with host Dana Bash.
The segment highlights Fetterman's comments on the vitriol he's received online, asserting that the far left has been far more cruel and personal in their attacks compared to the right.
In the video, Bash quotes from Fetterman's new book, Unfettered, where he writes: "I've drunk deeply of the venom of both the left and the right. As a connoisseur, I can confirm that the most poisonous, the bitterest is from the far left."
Fetterman elaborates on his personal experiences, explaining that he asked his digital team which platform hosted the harshest comments, and they immediately pointed to Bluesky (a social media site popular among left-leaning users).
He contrasts the right's insults—such as "really rough things and names" he won't repeat on TV—with the left's wishes for his death or harm, including phrases like "We're cheering for your next stroke," "Why couldn't the depression have won? And I hope your kids find you," and even a GIF depicting a stroke in his head. (Fetterman suffered a stroke in 2022 during his Senate campaign and has been open about his battles with depression.)
Bash reacts with visible shock, exclaiming, "Oh my gosh!" Fetterman adds that some commenters lamented his doctor saving his life and expressed literal cheers for him to suffer another stroke, questioning the mindset behind such cruelty as distinct from mere name-calling.
Fetterman references actress Cheryl Hines and comedian Bill Maher recently criticizing Democrats for becoming "mean" on Maher's podcast.
He also cites reactions to the September 10, 2025, assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, where some left-leaning individuals celebrated online. Additionally, he mentions the election of Democrat Virginia attorney general-elect Jay Jones despite leaked 2022 texts where he expressed violent fantasies about a Republican colleague and his children, including wishing "two bullets to the head" and urinating on his grave.
