Life is the process of learning. In the words of Townes Vand Zant, "to live is to fly, both low and high." It is through our understanding and comprehension of our history, that we are guided in our future. If we fail to recognize our past mistakes, we are destined to repeat them... I am sure someone famous said something like that as well. It is wise for us to always remember our history and tradition, for the good and the bad, for better or worse. This is how we are guided, this is our fundamental moral compass as a society and a civilization. Why would anyone think to censor or ban it, restrict people from the knowledge and understanding of it, and this will somehow make us a better society, a stronger civilization?
Just playing my own devil's advocate for a moment, even if you hate and loathe the Confederate flag as a symbol of racism and hate, why would you want to cleanse it from our eyes and pretend it doesn't exist? Doesn't that threaten to undermine your own rhetoric and "cause" a bit? What are you going to 'rail and hate upon' when it's gone? What symbol are you going to attack and criticize, so as to base some lame social point on? You've removed it from the discourse, it no longer exists! Hoisted on your own petard!
It's vitally important to recognize history and tradition and remain truthful about it, in as accurate a way as possible. I can understand the stigma associated with the Confederate flag, but much of this is based on a wholly false presumption of history, and this has been discussed to death in other threads. You want to apply 2010 social consciousness to the people of 1861 America, and it is factually inaccurate and absurd to make such an application. Your entire viewpoint from that point forward is based on a bigoted perspective, you see the Confederate flag as something it was never intended as, a symbol of racism as opposed to non-racism. As long as you have this bigoted view, you will never be able to overcome your ignorance of history and the significance of the facts.
