The President of Iran (I'mADinnerJacket, or whatever his name is) wants to go to ground zero in New York, to lay a wreath and was evidently denied permission.

The usual neocon suspects, among others, expressed faux outrage saying that the Iranian president's visit to ground zero would be a slap in the face.

How? What did iran have to do with the 9/11 attacks? Nothing. Maybe its just a photo op for the dude. Who cares? Let him lay his wreath.

Expensive public peace nightmare. How many groups do you think would be there to protest, and among them do you think there might be an idiot who might try something against the guy?

I understand. But, why protest? What did this dude, or his nation have to do with 9/11?

Ah, so you are not upset at the government for coming to the realization that it would be dangerous indeed for him to go there.

You are wondering why they might protest him going there. I think it may be the several al Qaeda that they have taken in since 9/11 that might give you a start. Google is your friend.

Anyway, WHY they might do it is immaterial when his safety is our responsibility.

No the neocons and the mayor specifically said that it was a slap in the face to americans for him to visit ground zero. They didn't cite security as the primary reason.

Bush has been a bigger friend and boon to al qaeda than iran has. Iran is not favorably disposed to sunni extremists.

Yet they have allowed some of the 'most wanted' into their nation and protect them.

I just think its petty and childish is all, to not let the dude lay a wreath, or for anyone to protest it.

wrong. The pakistani government and security services are riddled with al qaeda and taliban sympathizers. Who harbor and protect them. Official denials do not trump reality.
Ah, sympathizers. There are some sympathizers that live in the US, does this mean our government's position is their protection?

As I said, what is the official position of the government? If they are so friendly to al Qaeda why would bin Laden put out a hit on Musharraf?

the official position of the iranian government was to condemn the attacks of 9/11. Official statements mean little. Just like official statements of the pakistani gov

Al Qaeda considers shia to be dogs. There are many members of al qaeda that would probably like to chop the head off the iranian president.

Yet the leader of al Qaeda has called for his death. Again there is quite a considerable difference.

Realistically, if people are regularly let beyond the fence to lay wreaths then he should be able to. If not, let him view it like others do.

BTW - Just an off-topic question: What has Hillary said about Ahmadenijad lately?

I shouldn't even have to say this, but of course that iranian due is a quack and a theocratic asshole.

But, I see no harm or reason to protest if he wants to lay a wreath.

I think it is realistic to expect it, and for his own protection to simply say, "no" it would be a logistic nightmare and cost tons of cash to give him enough room to be safe.

Other than that, I agree personally, if they want to make a show and pretend that they have sympathy for our plight I see no harm.

I still see no reason to give special consideration and let them past the fence, if others are not regularly let beyond them, other than that... If it is possible to do it without extreme extra cost and ensure his protection then sure, allow it.

He's clearly using it as a political tool. I would let him, but I understand the reason for not allowing him in and the answer is not clear cut.
