Jerry Brown warns educators to brace for more cuts

Gov.-elect Jerry Brown said Tuesday that public schools in California should brace for more budget cuts when he presents his spending proposal in the next few weeks to solve the state's $25.4 billion budget deficit.

The Democrat called education and public safety the pillars of a civilized society but warned that the magnitude of the deficit problem facing California is "unprecedented in my lifetime" and that the state must prepare for drastic changes.

"I can't promise there won't be more cuts, because there will be," he told a gathering of school administrators, teachers union representatives and other public education officials from across the state during a special budget forum in Los Angeles.

Brown implored those at the forum, which focused on education spending, to "please sit down" when they see his budget proposal on Jan. 10. "If you're in your car, fasten your seat belt. It's going to be a rough ride, but we'll get through it," he said.

The governor-elect also pledged to slash the budget for the governor's office by 25 percent, which is about $5.5 million from the office's current $21.9 million annual budget, and said he would like to see the budget process completed 60 days after he takes office Jan. 3.

He said the office has "a lot more people in it today than the last time I was there and it's going to have a lot fewer by the time I arrive."

he is putting people out of job...i wonder if the dems will cry foul over this

I was just reading this on sfgate and then reading the comments after the article from the readers. You really can scratch out Jerry and insert Arnold and you have pretty much the same thing. I think you can easily call it partisanship but it seems there is a lot more comfort from the readers at having Jerry do this rather than Arnold. No difference in what either is/was proposing.

And yes STY I was pleasantly surprised as well.

i was surprised at brown as well...given his past record

since he is a dem, i think he can actually get this done...though i would not be surprised if cali gets some higher taxes in about a year

also, i hope the whole not passing the budget thing stops, i have friends who work for the state and they didn't paid for months

I'm not suprised. Brown was killed his first time around by prop 13, (which Brown virulently opposed - against public opinion), and Rose Bird. He had actually built a sizable budget surplus before the effects of prop 13 virtually wiped it out. Yet, in spite of his opposition, Brown followed the law and fully implemented prop 13. And, according to Howard Jarvis who wrote the bill, he did it well.

Contrary to the Meg Whitman campaign claims, crime actually went down in Oakland during Browns tenure as mayor, something like 10% but I don't remember exactly.

During the debate with Whitman Brown was asked if he was going to roll back the CSU/UC fees his response was "...not with a 19 billion dollar budget deficit..."

Since when do panderers give answers like that, especially a democrat? People forget that Brown was always a straight shooter, rarely parsing and often putting things too bluntly for most who were accustomed to the typical song and dance of pro politicians.

And as for Rose Bird, he deserved to be bitch-slapped for that.
