The system could be done away with while protecting them. It is unsustainable. I'd say anyone over 50 still receives their benefits while those under are reimbursed and able to put that money into something that actually would pay off, and be there when they retire.
while 'technically' ss could be done away with, it is not called the third rail of politics for nothing
the likelihood of it being 'done away with' is slim and none and slim has left town although some members of the gop have wanted to do away with it since it was implemented
it is just too entrenched in our system and as you know, congress critters prefer to give things away rather than take things away
the acronym TANSTAFL should be tattooed on the forehead of every congress critter when they are elected to congress

ssa.gov is actually a pretty decent site.
I deal with SS all the time for clients and had this very situation come up. If a person has yet to receive SS and their spouse is under the age of 62, the spouse does not get survivor benefits until age 60 (I was off by 2 years). Now, if Billy had kids, it would be different. If there are kids under 16 that the widow is taking care of, then she would get the bene's at any age (though they stop when all kids are 16 or over)
The bottom half of the income scale in america have not seen their life expectency increase at the same rate as the more wealthy half have enjoyed. Claiming that "we're all living longer" is a specious assertion.

Socialist inSecurity was ALWAYS a ponzi scheme. There is only a couple of ways to fix it. Raise taxes on our children and grandchildren to pay for our profligate ways or cut benefits. That is it. There isn't some magic, heretofore unforeseen solution. It is a function of math.
