Obama is a town on the west coast of Japan, 250 km from Tokyo.
Facing toward Wakasa Bay due north from Kyoto and Nara, the city is about three to four hours by train from Tokyo, and is served by the Obama Line of West Japan Railway. As of October 1, 2005, the city had an estimated population of 32,185.
In the Ritsuryō period, Obama was the capital of Wakasa Province, one of entrance of continental culture. Many temples related to the Yamato Dynasty are located in Obama, and the city is called "Nara by the sea". In the Edo period, Obama was the capital of the Obama Clan and was the starting point of the Mackerel Road to Kyoto. Otojiro Uratani is currently the mayor of Obama.

From a hotel executive to farmers and fishermen, Obama locals are rallying around the 2008 United States Democratic Presidential hopeful. The group tracks the twists and turns in Barack Obama's campaign from its headquarters in a hotel, whose lobby features a portrait of the politician. The group's secretary told ABC News, "I think our support base will keep growing. We wanted to do something because Mr. Obama doesn't feel like a stranger to us. He's like a relative to us."
