De Blasio’s NYPD Still Employs Stop And Frisk Tactics Using Gang Database: Report
A new report claims the New York Police Department is using a dubious database to profile and crack down on Black and brown youth.

A new report alleges that New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s crackdown on gangs is so overreaching and ill-defined, that he has effectively revived the same discriminatory policing practices he slams his predecessor for. The report, compiled by the Policing and Social Justice Project at Brooklyn College, accuses de Blasio’s New York City Police Department of targeting Black and brown communities with militarized takedowns by vaguely associating them with gangs. The college released its findings ― titled “Gang Takedowns in the de Blasio Era: The Dangers of ’Precision Policing” ― as the mayor continued to publicly criticize former city mayor and current 2020 presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg for the now-defunct stop and frisk policy.

Authors Josmar Trujillo and professor Alex Vitale say the NYPD has cobbled together policies that allow it to classify Black and brown youth as possible gang members using red flags that might be as simple as a kid wearing certain clothing or using slang. And under de Blasio, the number of young men being classified as gang members in non-white communities is skyrocketing. “The decision to frame the crime problems in certain communities as a gang problem is a political one,” said Vitale on Thursday. He added that the report is calling on the mayor to “switch to real, community-based policing strategies that try to treat young people with respect.”

I find your link lacking. This study cites no arrest numbers, and no citation of innocents who were arrested, only to be released for lack of cause. Only a complaint about a database.

Contrast that with stop and frisk, which overwhelmingly arrested innocent black men, and almost never found a gun. (which was the supposed reason for stopping and frisking)

Using Gang Database Poor gangbangers.

What exactly are gang clothes?

Be specific
Clothing. The uniform of Hispanic gangs is standard and easily recognizable. Most gang members adopt a basic style that includes white T-shirts, thin belts, baggy pants with split cuffs, a black or blue knit cap (beanie) or a bandana tied around the forehead similar to a sweat band.

Black gang members are individualistic in their dress. Black gangs tend to identify themselves by adopting certain colors. The "Crips" identify themselves with the colors of blue or black or a combination of the two. "Blood" gangs generally use red accessories, such as caps or bandanas, to identify themselves.

While clothing alone cannot positively determine membership in a street gang, color and style serve to identify each gang. Green can either mean the gang member is declaring neutrality for the moment or is a drug dealer. Black is worn by some Hispanic gangs and Heavy Metal Anglo gangs. Other common gang colors include brown or purple.

Note: Some gangs are starting to change their clothing style by no longer wearing their colors in an effort to deceive law enforcement and conceal their gang affiliation.

Gang clothing styles can be easily detected because of the specific way gang members wear their clothing. Examples are preferences for wearing baggy or "sagging" pants or having baseball caps turned at an angle. Gang members often prefer particular brands of shoes, pants or shirts. For example, some gangs like to wear plaid shirts in either blue, brown, black or red. These shirts are worn loosely and untucked. Gang graffiti, symbols, messages or gang names can be written or embroidered on jackets, pants and baseball caps. Other identifying items include belt buckles with the gangs initials, key chains, starter jackets (team jackets), and red or blue bandannas commonly called "rags .

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO the ignorance in this post is alarming.

So, are you for ending this practice?
Sure. But what are the stats? Or is this just a database issue?

Personally, I always said that if they stopped and frisked on Wall St, they'd find illegal prescription meds and lots of blow. But they never bothered.

do you want illegal guns off the street and out of the hands of violent gangs or not?

I personally don't depend on states or databases. They usually skew the results to fit the narrative. I go by actual history and experiences.

But true....they will find more drugs and guns in any other neighborhood outside of Black communities. When the right talks about confiscating guns......they are talking about confiscating from Black and Brown americans.

Most the guns illegal or not are in the hands of violent racist white men. I want the guns away from them.

They are a danger to society.

You repeating lies that all gang members are Black and Brown and walking the streets with illegal guns.....don't make it true.

You cited a study by an organization that is heavily biased against the policy they investigated. Surely, they should have statistics about arrests. Or do they just object to the database?

Your link cites a claim that more than 3000 people have been removed from the database, simply by complying with some inane process that NYPD offers.

So is this a case of disagreeing with the concept of the database, or is it ACTUALLY as heinous as stop and frisk used to be with respect to arrest numbers?

It doesn't make a difference to me. I disagree with both.

I disagree with stopping people because of the color of their skin because white people think they are in gangs and carrying illegal weapons.

The entire concept with it's stat's, data bases, out come, arrest numbers, etc...its racists in nature.

Either the entire practice stops or Black and Brown people have no rights in NY.

Trying to justify why it's being done because of the source of the link doesn't solve the problem in my community.
