Most of what I have read says they used the loopholes in the tax system to lower their tax bill.

I fail to see anything wrong with that. If there is a problem it is the tax system itself.

true, our tax system sucks with all of the 'special' breaks

but, big surprise, neither side seems to be prone to changing the tax code for their special interests while calling for changes for the other side's tax breaks
