Tancredo Campaign Staffer Outed

Tancredo presidential campaign staffer outed

UPDATE: My friend Dan Savage weighs in on the ethical issue of outing an 18 year old. It's a good, short read.

From Mike Signorile's Gist:

Tyler Whitney, the webmaster for the right-wing antigay Colorado Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo's presidential campaign, has been outed by the Michigan gay paper Between the Lines.... Last November, Whitney -- whose father was a speech writer for former conservative Michigan Gov. John Engler, who was no friend to gays -- went to a a YAF-sponsored protest against a pro-gay, pro-trans human rights ordinance and held a sign that said, "Go back in the closet!" Other signs at the protest included "Straight Power" and "Faggotry."

Whitney is 18 years old. Which raises an interesting question as to whether he's too young to be outed. Meaning, can you really commit enough sins, enough hypocrisy, enough damage to your own community by the age of 18 to justify being outed? Then again, once you read the story, your answer might just be "yes."

Seems a little harsh to out an 18 year old kid.

On the other hand, this gay, conservative kid went to pro-gay rights rallies and held up highly inflammatory anti-gay signs with his Con buddies.

Kid is an asshole, with obvious emotional problems. An internal conflict that must be tearing him apart. Self-loathing, anyone?

But outing a kid who is that young? I'm not sure how I feel about it.

I'd be afraid it would put him at high-risk for a suicide. I wouldn't do it.

BUT, I think he is a real asshole for calling gays those kind of names, in order to hide his own homosexuality. Why don't these right wing closet cases get some damned therapy?

Yeah, 18 is too young. On top of that, the obvious emotional battle the kid must be fighting within himself.

I'll never understand these gay Cons, who pretend to hate gays in order to get acceptance from their straight Con buddies.

Well, I guess at 18 it's more understandable than the ones at 40 and 50 still doing that.

Hmmm... It seems that if you are thrusting yourself into the political scene that you are pretty much fair game. Better to be honest and open if you are going to run in those circles. There are groups of Log Cabin people that you would be very comfortable among.

I don't know. He's low on the totem pole and rather young. I don't know what purpose it really served other than to embarass him among his conservative peers. He's only a webmaster. I think its better to keep it to elected officials or cabinent members that have made noteworthy attacks on gay rights.

However, his participation in those rallies makes me have no sympathy for him.

I agree...or, somebody like Ken Melham. When you reach the level of head of the RNC, and are actually coming up with strategies to use gay hatred to win elections, then you should have your gay ass outed, and that guy is a freaking flamer.

I agree, on both points. Just because he's (seemingly) a disgusting little pile of excreta doesn't make it right to out him. Especially when he's in such a hostile and potentially dangerous situation.

I tend to agree with both LadyT and you.

What about that california congressman, David Drier? I've always had suspicions about him. The dude is like in his 50s, has never been married, and is the best dressed male in congress. He looks very light on his feet!

I totally agree! I'd reserve it for people that are driving legislation that discriminates against gays.

I didn't really think about the danger as you guys did. But when you lie down with dogs you're bound to get fleas.

I've got no problem with him being outed either. That the problem in our society we baby people for too long. 18 is an adult. He can handle himself and if he can't thats his fault.

bingo...he is old enough to enlist...old enough to be drafted...he's old enough to be exposed as a profound hypocrite.

Suicide is more complicated than that, desh...

Rarely do people kill themselves because they're "sad", or "angry". It's more a complete lack of any emotions.

I don't know why "being an adult" means we all have to act like assholes to each other.
I don't know why it means we should worry more about them either. He can choose with whom he associates. I am sure there were people in that group that weren't out picketing.

I would disagree with anyone who thinks a person's sexual orientation has ANY place in politics. However, if a person attacks his own for political benefit. Then I have no sympathy for them either.

I can't understand why a gay person would fight so hard against being gay. I bet if the right wing Christian society would stop acting like they are subhuman, there wouldn't be so many closet gays. Live and let live. Too many people think they can tell other people how to live. It's no one's business but their own. The right used to be about less laws and regulations, but now the Morality Police have taken over. It's the worst form of hypocrisy.
