Passing out U.S. Constitutions on July 4th gets group tossed from annual celebration.
The Rhode Island Tea Party group says that it has banned from future Bristol 4th of July Parades. Last Saturday's parade, which is the oldest in the country at 224 years, had included a float representing the taxpayer group, which has recently been organizing "Tea Party" type political rallys.

Tea Party spokesperson Marina Peterson says she was contacted by a parade committe member on Wednesday and was told "It is because some members of the RI Tea Party passed out U.S. Constitutions to the crowd. Apparently passing out the US Constitution on Independence Day is an egregious violation of parade rules. This is despite the fact that other floats passed out solicitations for their businesses, which is against the Parade guidelines, and these businesses have NOT been told that they are banned from participating in the future."

Calls to parade committee member Jim Tavares were not immediately returned.

Here's a picture of the float, and crew, including 920WHJJ talk show host Helen Glover (front in white shorts)

That is truly screwed up. If passing out copies of the US Constitution is grounds for dismissal from a parade then the parade needs to stop being held on public streets.

I will be stunned if this stands. They'll be embarrassed into allowing free speech. Fricking insane. The constitution is against the parade rules...

James Tavares, the chairman of the float committee, said he called Tea Party teasurer Marina Peterson to tell her that the group violated the safety rules by having hand-outs on the parade route.

Peterson said the flyers were copies of the U.S. Constitution, distributed by people who were not part of the Tea Party unit.

If that's the case, those people were indistinguishable from the float contingent, since both groups were wearing the same yellow t-shirts, said Tavares.

Which is it? Were the people who handed out the flyers part of the "tea party" group or not?

AND .. if the "tea party" group knew handing out flyers was against the rules, why didn't they stop those who handed them out knowing they were indistinguishable from the group?

You can't make the argument that "we were just passing out copies of the Constitution on Independence Day" .. then turn around and claim it was someone else.

I told y'all several times that Liberals hate the Constitution and this is more evidence to support that statement. *shrug*

any parade i've ever been to has people on floats throwing candy to the kids on the sidewalk. If they are still doing this, it would be this side of insane to consider handing out flyers as a safety issue.

Especially when they let others hand out advertising pamphlets.

god damned anti-americans. almost like the richmond virginia civics center trying to eject the VCDL members for handing out 'guns save lives' stickers claiming they were littering when there were other groups handing out other literature propaganda. bastards should have their heads on pikes. (that was for you WM)

I've been involved in parade organization and handing out flyers during a parade is indeed a safety issue and it tends to slow down the pace of the parade .. and many parades require that anyone who intends to hand out flyers must first get a license to do so because of the question of content.

This argument seems strange coming from people who always profess we should follow the rules.

The rules were that no flyers could be handed-out from parade participants.

This group did not follow the rules .. it's just that simple.

Are you sure no other group was admonished for doing it?

Clue: bait.
Tell me which ones were, please. It would be interesting if every single group that handed out pamphlets were now banned from the parade.

I would suggest that the next time they huck them from parade floats attached to candy, it would be much safer.

What is it with you and your strawman arguments? If your not purposefully misrepresenting other people, you're marginalizing them for no other reason then they do not believe what you do. You're hypocricy is staggering.

What straw man; what hypocrisy? Democrats want "change", which obviously requires usurpation of the Constitution. *shrug*

They'll probably be declared a terrorist group next. But of course, there's no conspiracy to reduce america to an authoritarian state. That's just anti-masonic hokum.
