The Tesla S starts at just under $70k. Not cheap, but it was never designed to be an inexpensive commuter car. It is a luxury sedan in addition to being a marvel of electric car technology.

So just for the rich which makes the subsidy supported by the left seem a bit hypocritical since they hate tax breaks for the rich.

Make no mistake, I am not against electric cars in and of themselves. I just believe they should be allowed to succeed or fail in the free market and not be supported by tax payer dollars. That criticism goes for ALL businesses not just electric cars.

I also think it is a fantasy to think that electric cars will replace the internal combustion engine anytime soon

If we can get 20% of the cars on the road running on electricity in the next 20 years, the subsidy will have been well worth it.



While a $70k price tag puts it in the luxury market, it is not wildly expensive. Audi, Cadillac, BMW and more run that much or higher. And they are certainly not exclusively driven by rich people.

Hell, there are new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8s listed for $70k.

It is an "IF" that appears to be gaining momentum.

Yep, they got some of our tax dollars. Not enough to put a serious dent in the budget, but they got some.

First, the technology being developed will help relieve our dependence on foriegn oil. Second, they are creating jobs. And third, they are opening doors for others to do the same.

Money well spent, imo.

No it won't. Drilling for more oil here will do that.

4,900 cars is no laughing matter. When was the last time we had a start-up auto maker in the US? Tucker?

Yes, I do love this stuff. I love it when people use their imagination to improve lives, create new and useful technology, and shake up the status quo for an entire industry.

I love innovation as much as the next guy. I don't love bilking the taxpayer in the process. That is where you and I part ways. If the free market wants an electric car then so be it. Just leave the taxpayer out of it.

You are compartmentalizing your personal love of this technology. From a philosophical standpoint, the government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers. That is crony capitalism and we know where that leads

Gov't grants have long been a way for startup businesses to get on their feet. The market may or may not create an electric car. Look at what the major manufacturers have done. None of them even comes close to the technological advances the Tesla has brought.

Think of it as being like NASA. The technology will far outweigh the costs.

They seem to pick mainly losers to me!
That said our auto industry stifles innovation.
If tesla is the innovative game chancier that apple was I'm in!

The gov't is not picking winners and losers. It is giving grants to those who apply and fit the criteria.

Yes and who sets the criteria? Oh yeah, the gobblement and we all know that people in the gobblement aren't biased or have agendas or anything right? Oh no. That would never happen. Those gobblement folks are all about "public service" and making sure we all live a wonderful life because they really care unlike those filthy "capitalists".

You are embarrassing yourself now. I get it, you love the whole idea of "electric" cars and that is your prerogative. I don't care one way or the other. I just don't want tax dollars going toward it or any other pet project.
