Psychological studies show that people who believe something on an emotional level, get more defensive when their belief is attacked with facts and data. They are capable of believing nearly anything that preserves that belief.
For an example. Trumps took complete credit for shutting down the government, saying he was proud to do it and wear the mantle. Rightys applauded. Then he changed his mind, claiming it is Schumer's shutdown. Any reasonable person would understand it is Trumps shut down, But when he changed his mind, they mindlessly changed to his position, win spite of all evidence showing it was his. That is why debate with many Trumpies is impossible. Truth means nothing. Facts are lefty propaganda. trump is always right, even when he vacillates over and over.
It is exasperating.
