John Kerry defamed his fellow veterans for war crimes without evidence--until it became inconvenient for his political ambitions. George McGovern was willing to abandon our prisoners of was since "begging is better than bombing." Jimmy Carter abandoned long-standing allies in Latin America and the Middle East to anti-zealots. And Obama didn't just deny American exceptionalism, he apologized for the "narrowness and prejudice" of his countrymen. Wilson lamented that Americans exhibit "the narrowness and prejudice of a family" because we put our own nation and interests ahead of other nations. Wilson entered World War I not to revenge the deaths of Americans or to protect our territory and commerce, but for abstractions like "the rights and liberties of small nations." The Wilsonian streak is alive and well among progressives today, whether in Bill Clinton's foolish attempt at nation-building in Somalia or Barack Obama's reckless intervention in Libya under the incautious banner of the the "responsibility to protect."
Early in Russia's war on Ukraine, Joe Biden canceled a routine missile test because he didn't want to appear "provocative," as if America was somehow to blame for Russia's war of aggression.
