The Confederacy was about Slavery... it should be a source of Shame

A geographical line has been drawn across the Union, and all the States north of that line have united in the election of a man to the high office of President of the United States, whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery. He is to be entrusted with the administration of the common Government, because he has declared that that "Government cannot endure permanently half slave, half free," and that the public mind must rest in the belief that slavery is in the course of ultimate extinction.

The guaranties of the Constitution will then no longer exist; the equal rights of the States will be lost. The slaveholding States will no longer have the power of self-government, or self-protection, and the Federal Government will have become their enemy.

It is about time we examine the true reasons for the creation of the Confederate States of America. By doing that, we can acknowledge the reason, to preserve and protect Slavery.

Perhaps then, we can stop this nonsense and treat the Confederates as treasonous racists.

This doesn't change how we feel about the South today, but does change what the Confederates did against this country.

Finally, let's create a museum for all the Confederate memorials. A museum that leaves you ashamed of what humans were capable of...like the Holocaust Museum, an honest investigation of what happened, who and why.

Perhaps then, we can have the reconciliation this country desperately needs.
