I have always had trouble with spelling and little details. It is one of my challenges. For many teachers, who meant well, it created an obstacle to my education. Many felt I could not move on to higher level thinking or working, I made progress from my early days, and spell check really helped a lot once it became available in the late 1980's.
My parents bought me a $500 word processor when I was in High School and it really made a huge difference in my academic life. Suddenly teachers affected with this judgment about me let it go. Luckily this lower level mental process became much less of an issue. The thing weighed like 30 pounds and I had to lug it to classes that required me to write exams in class. Its funny because when I was judged on the cosmetics on technicalities my grades were poor, but I quickly became a straight A student.
So, those teachers who claimed my problem was more than just spelling, and that I could not do higher level work were proven wrong. Some were shocked. I do not know how many times I had to point out what a bad speller so many known well educated people were. I carried an original copy of the Declaration of Independence to show these teachers.
IN College, the teachers who claimed to care about what they actually taught was all that matters would give me poor grades if I was not allowed to have my spell checker with me.
I managed to get good grades in College and went on to get a Doctorate in Law. I passed the Bar Exam my first try without a spell checker. Even doing well on the hand written essays.
I went to an elementary school reunion. When I told my 6th grade teacher that I was a lawyer, she was shocked. She actually apologized to me. Now I have a paralegal check anything that goes out of the office due to the prejudice people have against spelling errors.
Now days the only area I face this is when Supporters of Neville, the Felon seek to deflect against my posts. This type of small minded prejudice is only used to pick a non-relevant issue to avoid facing any reality.
