Atheist Richard Dawkins aids Haiti, touts God-free giving

http://javascript<b></b>:void('Recommend')

British scientist and outspoken atheist Richard Dawkins, shown here at University of Virginia in 2006, is raising funds for Haitian relief -- but only through non-religious groups.

By Eric Dobbs, RichardDawkins.net

Donations to faith-based aid groups are soaring and believers get a great deal of just credit for stepping up to help in Haiti. Now unbelievers want the world to know they're just as caring. The champion of unbelief Richard Dawkins, Britain's star atheist scientist, has announced he'll personally cover the PayPal fees (up to $10,000) for donations to two non-religious relief groups -- Doctors without Borders and the Red Cross -- through a newly established site called Unbelievers Giving Aid.
The twin goals at the site are are first, to help Haiti, and second to "counter the scandalous myth that only the religious care about their fellow-humans."
While others debate if it's God or the devil that caused the quake, the atheists and skeptics here say the natural world is...
... "supremely indifferent to human affairs and sadly indifferent to human suffering. Those of us who understand this reality are sometimes accused of being indifferent to that suffering ourselves. Of course the very opposite is the truth: we do not hide behind the notion that earthly suffering will be rewarded in a heavenly paradise, nor do we expect a heavenly reward for our generosity: the understanding that this is the only life any of us have makes the need to alleviate suffering even more urgent.
Regular F&R readers might recall that earlier this year we saw that unbelievers were among the fund-raising leaders at Kiva, the international Internet person-to-person micro-lending site. When I checked in July, the unbelievers were leading other special interest groups including churches, raising funds to uplift the world's poorest.

yawn....the third thread lie by atheistmark today

christians do not say it is their fault, one wacked person does and dumbassmark attributes it to all christians

Excellent rebuttal.

Atheists just have the compassion and sense of charity naturally lacking in Christians and Muslims.

query: if atheists contribute more to help people than those who are religious, why did the author of the article find it "news" that atheists had begun contributing?.......and how is it that Dawson's $10k seems to outweigh the contributions of say, the Salvation Army?.....

I found a good way to unite atheism, and christianity on behalf of Haiti.

Pat Robertson voodoo dolls, available on ebay.
100% of the proceeds go to Haitian relief.

This Is why I dont beleave in the christian god. How can there be a god when things like this happen. 70,000 bodies. How could any one believe in a god that allows this kind of tragedy.

While I don't believe in a Christian god, were he/she to exist, the reason for such tragedy would be outside of our understanding. Thus you cannot accurately proclaim such a event as being proof in either belief.

Did God tell them to build a city on top of a fault line? Did God tell them to build their buildings with insufficient structural support to withstand a quake? If you want to hold God responsible for everything that happens, then I expect you ought to demand that people only do what God desires..........

There is no heaven. and if there was a god we would all be in heaven.

why?....if you don't believe in a God and don't believe in a heaven, why would you expect to be there......if there is a God and you refuses to believe in him, the last place you should expect to be is next to him......
