Canada Opposition's Jack Layton Dies

TORONTO—Jack Layton, leader of Canada's left-leaning New Democratic Party, died early Monday, just weeks after announcing a temporary leave of absence to battle cancer.

Mr. Layton, whose party vaulted to official opposition status after a historic showing at the May 2 federal election, was 61. While he fell well short of clinching a majority of parliament for his party, he vaulted the NDP from a long-time also-ran to the country's second-most-powerful party.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative party won the poll, clinching his first majority government since taking the premiership in 2006. Together, the Conservatives and the NDP's strong showing marginalized Canada's two other main parties, the Liberals and the Bloc Quebecois.
Mr. Layton promised to vociferously defend his party's left-leaning platform against the Conservatives. But in Canada's parliamentary system, the NDP's ability to get in the way of legislation pushed by a majority government is limited.
Mr. Layton, a long-time Canadian politician, used a firebrand populism, and his own personal charisma, during the May polls. Suffering from cancer throughout the campaign, at rallies and on the hustings, he often brandished a cane he used after breaking a hip, an injury related to his cancer.
When Mr. Layton announced his leave of absence, the party named novice lawmaker and former union head Nycole Turmel as interim chief.
