The Holidays....

Good. Hopefully the Notre Dame fans can't fly in for that Saturday's game against USC at the LA Coliseum.

Good. Wal-Mart sucks.

Thats what was said about ours before and while it was being built.....now its packed with hundreds of customers from the second it opens until the second it closes, every day....

I'd say you in the big minority here.....

That's because they've shut down the small mom-and-pop operations in your town. Their idea of 'competition' is to underprice everyone (big box-ers can afford to do that) until their competition goes out of business, then the prices come back up. BTW, their prices are low because they pay slave laborers to make the cheap plastic Chinese shit they sell, and their 'associates' are paid as low as U.S. laws permit. The store in your town is crowded for one of two reasons: its shoppers don't care what their 'bargain' actually costs (slave wages stateside and slave worker conditions abroad), or it's all they can afford due to the Wal-Mart effect (look it up).

A lot of people in Oakland are poor which is why the Walmart is always packed. One might think such a progressive town wouldn't shop there but people in Oakland don't give a f*ck.

The (legion) poor in Oakland don't have the money to shop elsewhere.

Oakland has a large number of mom and pop stores so there are options for folks but yeah when money is tight people look for the best value.

Notice how many, all over the country, for whom 'money is tight'. Wal-Mart both creates and exploits this ugly reality.

I go to my corner store two blocks away because I am lazy. I'll pay six dollars for a box of cereal there when I could go ten blocks to Safeway and get that same box on sale for maybe $2.50 or $3.00. (there are no Walmarts in San Francisco) Money is tight for me but I'm a lazy idiot so I pay more to stay closer to the house. If there was a Walmart nearby I would probably go. I don't like to see people exploited but if I weren't so lazy I'd rather save money.

If you can afford to be lazy, then money isn't that tight for you.

For what you'd pay in gas, it's probably a wash anyway.

No one forces you to work there or shop there....whats your point ?

Its not any different than other 'big box' warehouses that have been around for decades, where you pay a yearly fee to join....

Who said anything about being forced? Stupidly misinterpret much?

The Wal-Mart Effect reduces the options. Go read up on it. Or don't. Your ignorance shines brightly as a result of the latter.
