The liquid in a bottle was always one ounce less than it was supposed to be. The punt was the king’s ounce in the form of a tax on wine.

The King’s Ounce is probably a myth, while it certainly applied to tax collectors throughout history. Democrats are not kings, but the way they are going Americans will get the ounce while parasites take the rest.

It's not an expression I've ever come upon. I expect the kings who collected these ounces drank themselves to death before it caught on, though I can't answer for American kings!

To Kacper: It is a choice between grape or grain. Never mix the two.

I usually chose the grape in my drinking days. Sad to say I no longer engage in my two favorites ——— SMOKING & DRINKING. I always tell my wife: “When I have one foot over the finish line I will finish the race smoking like a chimney after swallowing a quart of my favorite libation:

To iolo: A lot of those European kings enjoyed long lives because they drank whenever they ate. Food and booze taken together was necessary. (There is no record of kings drinking water.)

Seaman on sailing ships got a daily ration of grog because the food was bad. Indeed, in my years as Sailbad the Sinner many an old-time seaman told me to always drink spirits with the food you eat in a foreign port. One time in Hong Kong I did not follow the advice. After dining on one of Hong Kong’s floating restaurants:

Incidentally, alcoholism is a societal problem —— not drinking.

There is more than a grain of truth in drinking for medicinal purposes. If you can handle it take a sip of wine with food. Think about booze as preventative medicine the same as taking a pill.

If nothing else, remember that you see more old drunks than you see old doctors.
