The lady in yellow has passed away

Mott the Hoople

Sweet Jane
Yesterday Corizan Aquino, the widow of Ninoy Aquino passed away. Also known in the Philippines as Tita Cory (Aunt Cory) she was famous for wearing yellow dresses and her people power movement that over threw the brutal Dictator Ferdinand Marcos. The lesson that she showed the rest of the world was that if a small countries people removed their consent from brutal dictators, even those whom were the proxies of powerful large nations, that they could not continue to govern. Her influence had a profound impact on what later happened in eastern Europe and on leaders like Lech Welesa. One could make the argument that the four most influential person of the last 25 years of the 20th century were Pope John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, Corizan Aquino and Lech Welesa.

Mana Po Tita Cory. Rest in peace.

Remove Ronald Reagan and replace with Mikhail Gorbachev.

Don't hijack my thread. This aint about Reagan. Show some respect to the Lady in Yellow. Not to take away from their accomplishments but when men like Reagan and Gorbachev postured Cory Aquino actually did it and not only did she do it, she did it against incredible odds. And she had the courage to do it after watching Marco's thug put a bullet in her husbands head. Gorbachev or Reagan never demonstrated that kind of personal courage. So give Tita Cory her due.

Kudos, much respect and R.I.P. Aunt Cory.
Most the younger generation don't understand the historical significance of Ninoy Aquino's assassination and his wife's subsequent organization of People Power.

It was the first time before or since that a major political figure was assassinated on live TV before an international audience. It was horrifying to say the least.

For those not old enough to remember. Ninoy Aquino was a Filipino dissident who opposed the Marco's regime. He was returning to the Philippines in order to lead the opposition party. He was warned by the Marco's regime not to return. Aquino had a large contingent of US journalist with him and US State Department representatives thinking this would assure the safety of he and his family. When Aquino left the plane he walked up to shake the hands of some dignatories when a uniformed police man walked right up to him and in front of an international groups of TV cameras, shot Aquino in the head. That was the end for Marco's. The US with drew it's support for him and Tita Cory was able to succesfully organize political opposition (People power was when nearly 2 million Filipino's marched on/in Manila to protest Marco's action.). Shortly there after Marco's got out of Dodge and left the country. The event has subsequently became a classic study on political activism.

wow who cares
A hell of a lot of people back then. Ultimately the US support of Marco's is why Clark Air base was not rebuilt and the Subic Bay lease was not renewed. It cost the Filipino's dearly economically but it cost the US dearly strategically.

Indeed.

It was a huge deal for Aquino to lead her people into revolt, especially after her husband had been assassinated.
