Hard to figure but the second most progressive was President D D Eisenhower for hundreds of reasons and next was surprisingly President Richard Millhouse Nixon for fathering EPA, OSHA, and for his attempts to make Medicare available for all Americans.

Dig deeper. Nixon's healthcare initiatives were merely an attempt to pre-empt Ted Kennedy, whom Nixon was poilitcaly terrified of.
Further, Nixon opened relations with China, affecting the change in the manufacturing structure of the world and resulting in the economic chaos and devastation we now suffer under.

Seems like Teddy was the antithesis of today's Republican.
 
I dunno how you can say that Teddy "left the GOP" for a truly progressive party when:

1) He left in protest of Taft, a more progressive president than himself.
2) He rejoined the party, and served as GOP Chairman in 1919, intending to bring it back into power during the 1920 election cycle.

Out of step with the GOP of 2012, certainly, but in his day he remained a Republican to his death. His run with the progressives was brought about by his ego, and his inability to sit and watch Taft do the job he felt only he was capable of doing. Taft was also sane, which didn't help him to score favour points with Teddy.

Taft promoted a different progressivism, one that stressed the rule of law and preferred that judges rather than administrators or politicians make the basic decisions about fairness.

The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 banned misleading labels and preservatives that contained harmful chemicals.

The Pure Food and Drug Act banned food and drugs that are impure or falsely labeled from being made, sold, and shipped.

Roosevelt was also served as honorary president of the school health organization American School Hygiene Association from 1907 to 1908, and in 1909 he convened the first White House Conference on the Care of Dependent Children.

Perhaps, but my observations on Nixon remain valid. I have never forgiven Teddy Kennedy for having left Nixon at the altar on healthcare. Our country could have enjoyed at least 40 years of healthcare for everyone and been most well respected internally and externally for it.
 
proposing voucher systems to change schools.......proposing reform of Medicare, Social Security......proposing restructuring the tax system......proposing an actual reduction in spending......proposing ending the killing of the unborn......seems to me like the Democrats are opposing a whole lot of Republican changes.....maybe we're calling the wrong party "conservative"..........
