Man this sucks, I bet Trump had a hand in this too?!!

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end in May 2026, the CBS television network announced in a surprise statement on Thursday.

The move "is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night [television]," and "is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters," CBS said.

The announcement comes just two weeks after CBS parent company Paramount settled a lawsuit with President Donald Trump stemming from a CBS interview with his 2024 election rival Kamala Harris.

The move brings a close to the more than three-decade old programme, leaving the network without a late-night comedy talk show for the first time since 1993.

Host Stephen Colbert broke the news at a taping earlier on Thursday evening, triggering a chorus of boos from the live studio audience.

"I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners," Colbert said, adding: "And of course, I'm grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night in here, out there, all around the world."

Colbert had been informed of the decision on Wednesday night, he told the audience during his Thursday monologue.

"Yeah, I share your feeling," he said, as the crowd in the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York shouted "no" and booed.

"It's not just the end of our show, but it's the end of The Late Show on CBS. I'm not being replaced. This is all just going away," he continued. "It is a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it."

The Late Show was created by CBS, the BBC's US news partner, in 1993 as a competitor to NBC. It came after a dispute between hosts David Letterman and Jay Leno over who should succeed Johnny Carson on the wildly-popular NBC's Tonight Show.

Colbert took over the CBS programme from Letterman in 2015, and has become one of Trump's staunchest critics on late night TV.

Before taking over the job at The Late Show, Colbert had been the host of "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central – a programme which skewered American conservative politics and culture.

The announcement of the ending of the programme came amid talks between Paramount and Skydance Media to merge the two companies, a move that would require approval from the US federal government.

Democratic Senator Adam Schiff posted on X on Thursday that he had finished taping an interview with Colbert just before the cancellation was announced.

He questioned whether the announcement was tied to the $16m (£12m) settlement the network agreed to pay to Trump, writing: "If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserved to know".

The settlement came after Trump sued CBS last October alleging the network had deceptively edited an interview that aired on its 60 Minutes news programme with his presidential election rival Kamala Harris, to "tip the scales in favour of the Democratic party".

Paramount said it would pay to settle the suit, but with the money allocated to Trump's future presidential library, not paid to him "directly or indirectly".

Colbert has been a major critic of Trump, and has hosted many Democratic politicians during his tenure as host. Last month, he held a discussion with Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist leading the race to be New York City's next mayor.

The decision to cancel the programme comes as networks struggle to attract younger viewers, amid competition from online streamers and podcasts, along with increased costs of live television.

"We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire 'The Late Show' franchise," CBS said in its statement.

"We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television."

Rival broadcast networks, ABC and NBC, will continue to air their late-night talk shows.

ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! will continue taping in the fall, while NBC hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers have signed contracts to continue hosting The Tonight Show and Late Night until 2028, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Late Show era died a few decades ago.....social media and streaming is the new era. Besides, its hard laughing at the shit that's going on in this country, nothing is funny about it. Even Jon Stewart's Podcast show is struggling, nothing is funny anymore, cept Trumps orange tan and the burger meat on his az.

Man this sucks
Nope, it's a good thing. It's the law of supply and demand. Colbert's niche audience of TDS-infected morons isn't enough to justify a program.

Colbert isn't funny; he isn't even interesting ... except to TDS-infected morons.

They're lying. The show sucked and now is a huge liability. CBS needed to cut the cord as soon as possible.

Nope. The programme really never had any comedy.

I bet all eight of them boo'ed for an hour, although I wouldn't be surprised if they simply used a "boo"-track

Trump’s had his brain twisted into knots and owns him for life, just like he owns you. There's not enough libtards to save the washed-up idol’s failed show. Gutfeld’s shredding him nightly, turning the goldmine of moronic libtard takes into comedy gold for the masses.

The Grand Wiz has enlighten us again with his infinite wisdom.

We are living in a cultural dark age.
In the 1500s, authoritarianism stifled the progress of humanity,
and within a couple of centuries, liberal democracy became that for which nations needed to strive.

In the present day, free people handled liberal democracy so inartfully
that authoritarianism has made a strong comeback.

The American resistance to modern democratic socialism may well have been the biggest factor of all.

With hundreds of channels on TV,
it is now impossible for ANY show other than the Superbowl, it seems,
to garner a big enough market
to get sufficient advertising
to offer quality programming.

Most people on this forum cannot remember
the quality of variety shows and teleplays
that were aired in the 1950s.

What blew up TV was unfettered, under-regulated capitalism
which allowed the industry to destroy itself.
Entrepreneurs doing whatever they wanted for short term profit killed television.

The motto of our neighbor state to the north is
LIVE FREE OR DIE.

Living free has brought us here,
largely because we handled it so poorly,
so now we have the second option.

Wow.

The good news is that, with the show ending and it's Spring leading into the Midterms, I expect Colbert to go balls out all the way to the end. No restraint. LOL

Is your tiny penis fetish still bothering you??????
He loves dicks pics. I've sent him several since he's so infatuated with mine. We have a special code phrase; he posts he wants a dick pic by saying "Mr. Tiny Penis" and then I send him one. He loves them.

One of the oddities on JPP is the MAGA fascination with male genitalia. They don't talk about tits, pussy and ass, but they loooove to talk about dicks and penises. How long they are, how hard they are and assfucking other men with them. Weird.

Besides Legina's desire for my penis and @Text Drivers are Killers fascination with Tranny Dicks, there's this example:
8der4s.jpg

Colbert’s show has a larger audience than Fallon or Kimmel.

Stupid move by CBS.
Smart move by CBS. Check Gutfeld's ratings.

CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert topped the 11:35 pm hour in total viewers with an average of 2.417 million across 41 first-run episodes. The Late Show was also the only program to show an increase over the first quarter, with the show up 1%. In the coveted 18–49 demo, Colbert brought in 219,000 viewers.

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! came in second for the 11:35 pm slot with an average of 1.772 million viewers; however, the show edged out Colbert in the demo with 220,000 viewers.

Meanwhile, NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon finished in third with an average of 1.188 million viewers and 157,000 in the demo.

The biggest ratings winner, however, was Fox News’ Gutfeld! in the 10 pm slot. The show, which takes a satirical look at the weekly news with a panel of comedians and political commentators, averaged 3.289 million viewers for the second quarter and 238,000 in the demo.

I expect Colbert to double down over the next year.

It's always possible that CBS can change their mind but this reeks of a backroom deal with the Orange Daddy in order to push through their multibillion dollar merger.

If a grown man can see his own penis,
he's not eating well enough.

I've got photos of myself in my boxing days.
Not an ounce of fat to be seen.
I had to be out of my fucking mind.

Intelligent, rational and education people understand that when there's only one Alt-Right show available and there are three center or LW shows, the latter three will divide the viewing population.

219,000 + 220,000 + 157,000 = in the demo 596000 compared to Fox's 238,000.

BTW, Legina, how'd you like that last dick pic? Feel free to let me know when you want another. You know the magic words, kiddo!
