Outside the 12 Oaks at Woodfield apartments in Rolling Meadows, the U.S. and Mexican flags fly side by side -- the flags are the same size and fly at the same height on 30-foot poles.

The equal treatment of the flags has not gone unnoticed by critics, including the mayor of Rolling Meadows and some veterans, particularly one with the Warriors Watch Riders, who was part of an honor guard that was escorting a returning soldier home when he looked over and noticed the two flags.

"This is America," said Rick Williams, of Downers Grove. "They should only be flying one flag. I don't think they should fly the Mexican, Italian or Irish flag except maybe on their national holidays."

Rolling Meadows Mayor Ken Nelson says there's no question the U.S. flag should be higher, and he said residents have complained to city officials.

But Mike Sparks, the owner of the 12 Oaks complex and no stranger to controversy in Rolling Meadows, says he is flying both flags properly. In fact, his property has 24 flag poles -- each 30 feet tall -- on the 35 acres, half flying U.S. flags and half Mexican ones.

"It's part of our marketing program to the Mexican community," said Sparks. "Seventy percent of our residents are Mexican. Why not? They're good, hardworking people, and they pay their rent."

While Nelson and others think it is disrespectful to fly the U.S. and Mexican flags at the same height, the U.S. Flag Code seems ambiguous on this point.

Most people contacted for a ruling -- from veterans' groups to a congressman's office -- referred the Daily Herald to Web sites instead of experts.

One popular site suggested by the Chicago regional office of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is a report from the Congressional Research Center, posted by the U.S. Senate at

It says, "No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America ... No person shall display the flag of the United Nations or any other national or international flag equal, above, or in a position of superior prominence or honor to or in place of the flag of the United States."

However, a later section says: "When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height."

Michael Peck, a military veteran who is superintendent of the Lake County Veteran's Assistance Commission, interprets this as meaning a flag from another sovereign nation can fly at the same height as the U.S. flag.

Sparks, meanwhile, thinks a lot of the complaints are just anti-Mexican rhetoric.

"I used to have mostly all Polish employees, and I flew the Polish flag, and we didn't get any complaints about that," Sparks said.

Nelson strongly objects to that characterization.

"I have no objection to them flying the Mexican flag," said the mayor. "The objections we have heard is that the flags are not being shown properly. I have not heard anyone objecting to their flying the Mexican flag."

The U.S. flag code does not include enforcement clauses, said Nelson, so there's nothing the city can do. The congressional report confirms that no penalties can be assessed for improper flag display, saying " ... the Code functions simply as a guide to be voluntarily followed by civilians and civilian groups."

Communication between officials and Sparks is limited to begin with, because the landlord and some tenants have filed lawsuits against the city stemming from summer 2008, when police barricaded all but one entrance to the complex and began checking all people coming and going, and also from a dispute over taxes.

Sparks said he would change the way he flies the flags if he were proved to be incorrect. He says a Warriors Watch Riders member once walked into the apartment complex office and presented him with a medallion for flying the U.S. flag correctly- meaning, the code's provision that the U.S. flag should always be on the right.

Sparks does have a medallion, but Wayne Lutz, founder of Warriors Watch Riders, said in an e-mail the group does not give out awards for proper flag-flying, and while its members are passionate about respect for the U.S. flag, they are nonpartisan.

Rick Williams, meanwhile, said the first time he saw the flags at 12 Oaks he believed the Mexican flag was actually higher than the U.S. one. When he returned to the complex a few days later, however, the flags were at the same height.

The governments in foreign countries would be greatly offended if their flag was flown lower than Old Glory. A little respect is all that was asked for. Democrats changed that with their no-border policies. I have no respect for the flags of the countries illegal aliens come from. So little respect I once said “The welfare state has its own flag.”

There are governments in today’s world that would execute an immigrant if they flew the national flag of their homeland in order to make a political statement. In this country, immigrants flying Mexico’s flag are rewarded for flying the flag of the country they could not get away from fast enough. Their not-too-subtle message is their way of saying the U.S. owes them. They flock here by the millions demanding the free stuff their own governments and countrymen will not provide. And please do not tell me about the illegal aliens who do not demand a government handout. (The size and frequency of their demonstration, and the noise they make, tells me the number of non-parasite illegal aliens is non-existent.)

To me, it looks like illegal aliens are replacing the Confederate Flag with Mexico’s flag:

Waving the flag of the country they'd do anything to avoid being sent back to, DREAMers were out in force as President Trump's plane touched down in San Diego. The Mexican flags flew, and the hate-Trump chants pounded from the left.

Don't expect the rest of the media to notice any of this. Or the chants of "¡sí se puede!" or the Che banners and t-shirts, the foul language, or the scads of ethnic Mexican clothing to demonstrate the absence of assimilation. Nope, most of the press did its level best to keep such images out of the news and present only the most sanitized versions of the anti-Trump protesters to the public.

Fortunately, since there were a lot of them covering the rallies, the details leaked out here and there. Two news agencies, Fox News 5, the local station in San Diego, and Breitbart News, in Beverly Hills, reported without filters, as did the San Diego Free Press, a radical left-wing news agency that actually likes the foul language and Mexican flag-waving. The New York Times did note the Che t-shirts even as it snidely called the pro-Trump rallies "pep rallies." (Would they have called a pro-Obama rally a "pep" rally?) But if you wanted to see what the rallies were really like, most of the local press by and large blacked out the flags from the coverage.

These are just some samples from my camera aimed at the television set and the web, but there was a whole lot more in the Fox video. The anti-Trump protest was so blatantly counterproductive that it almost seemed to be from The Onion, designed to rally support not for DREAMers, but for the Americans who oppose DREAMers. There wasn't much else to make of the Mexican costumes, the Che t-shirts and banners, the foul language in the signs, and the ethnic Mexican clothing. File under "unclear on the concept."

Local station KUSI, which also recorded the "sí se puede" chants, had some Mexican clothing on parade here, as did Fox 5:

Now, here's what's obnoxious from the press. 10News, another San Diego local station, did its best to conceal the Mexican flags flying at the leftist anti-Trump rallies:

Notice how the upper right corner contains what is likely a Mexican flag, and it's helpfully cut off. If they had some other Mexican flags in their coverage, I'd attribute it to composition issues, but since there weren't any, it appears to have been a bid to keep the flags off the page.

The San Diego Union-Tribune had a small flash of a Mexican flag in the video of one of the rallies but no comment otherwise. It also covered the anti-Trump protests from the Tijuana side, where, apparently, no Mexican flags were waved at all, and the reporter, the reputable Sandra Dibble, noted there was little opposition to the wall as well on that side of the fence.

The CBS affiliate, Channel 8, was worst of all. It scrubbed all of the Mexican flags from the anti-Trump rally from its coverage, presenting a positively sanitized view of what went on at those things.

It's also noteworthy that in different accounts of local news coverage I watched on television, the news reporters counted 300 demonstrators at the pro-Trump rally and 100 at the 5:30 P.M. anti-Trump rally, not comparing the turnout side by side. They apparently didn't want to point out that Trump has more supporters here than opponents, at least based on rally turnout.

In any case, the pictures dribble out. What an irony here that as the left rallies its biggest thugs to rouse its base, President Trump does the same thing – rallies the leftist thugs – except to energize the right. That's the only reason why the media seek to conceal these protesters.

Why do people give a shit about colored pieces of cloth? Burn them, bury them, so what. There are millions more. If a person burns a flag, what does that do to you? You are letting them get under your skin with such a simple thing. Walk away.

The act of burning the flag in no way diminishes the brave acts of these men. It is an act of protest, Jefferson encouraged protest. It’s the American way.

While stirring for its artistic and aesthetic value, that photo was staged by the photographer.

I believe if anyone ever asked an Iwo Jima veteran what they were fighting for, they would have said they were fighting to keep themselves and their buddies alive. I think the probability is close to zero percent any of them were risking their lives for a flag printed on cloth.

The Supremes have ruled on it a few times and is not against the law to burn a flag. Scalia was one of the clearest defenders of the right. Burning a flag is low class and obnoxious, but first amendment protects it, and really our patriotic allegiance is to the Constitution, our democratic institutions, our values, and our communities. A piece of cloth is nowhere close to being ranked with those.

American history according to Phantasmal: 1776 Philadelphia man angry at the fledgling government burns the flag in front of Jefferson and the signers. Jefferson addresses the crowd " Don't be angry he is not being disrespectful he is just protesting which is his right."

What really happened: man burns flag in front of Jefferson and the signers. Jefferson yells "Arrest that man he is showing total disrespect to this young nation." The man is tried and fined the equivalent of 6 months pay and became an indentured servant.

During the bloody Battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division take the crest of Mount Suribachi, the island’s highest peak and most strategic position, and raise the U.S. flag. Marine photographer Louis Lowery was with them and recorded the event. Americans fighting for control of Suribachi’s slopes cheered the raising of the flag, and several hours later more Marines headed up to the crest with a larger flag. Joe Rosenthal, a photographer with the Associated Press, met them along the way and recorded the raising of the second flag along with a Marine still photographer and a motion-picture cameraman.

Rosenthal took three photographs atop Suribachi. The first, which showed five Marines and one Navy corpsman struggling to hoist the heavy flag pole, became the most reproduced photograph in history and won him a Pulitzer Prize. The accompanying motion-picture footage attests to the fact that the picture was not posed. Of the other two photos, the second was similar to the first but less affecting, and the third was a group picture of 18 Marines smiling and waving for the camera. Many of these men, including three of the six Marines seen raising the flag in the famous Rosenthal photo, were killed before the conclusion of the Battle for Iwo Jima in late March.

Yet the US flag is nowhere to be seen.

I have several of the flags of the Confederacy in mine. It's clear that it triggers you. If you don't like that I do, and you've expressed your opinion about how you feel about such things, try to take them down.
