The origins of transgender treatments are a few quacks that experimented with individuals without even having basic outlines of the scientific objectives involved. It was "let's see what happens".

One painful story about the newborn that suffered a medial mistake where the child's penis was cauterized. They conspired with the parents to tell the boy he was a female. He found out in his teens and demanded to be allowed to live as a boy. He committed suicide at 17.

I remember reading about that in some bullshit, hippy liberal textbook a long time ago. It was written while the kid was young and seemed to be happy living as a girl. They tried to claim, blah blah gender is just a socialized trait and all boys can be turned into girls and vice versa. When he got older that notion was debunked by reality in that case, but the damage was done. A lot of people read about it, believed it and never heard the full story.
