btw, north's conviction was overturned with help from the super liberal ACLU on a technicality. most rwnuts get away with breaking the rules of law. Then, there's that fullblown nutjob, Gee Gordon Liddy. Oh wait, he's from nixon but same difference. but wait, nixon was reagan's vp. Proves that shit does go downhill.

Allegedly it was due to a bank holiday somewhere in the transfer chain, but that was after Carter had lost and was heading out the door.

Carter pretty much lost the day the rescue mission went sideways. Before my time, but from people I have talked with, it was a BFD that Carter hadn't launched a rescue, and once it fell apart and the hostages were scattered, it was like a punch to the windpipe of America as most schools were starting off the day with a moment of silence for the hostages, people were tying yellow ribbons all over God's creation in support of the hostages, churches were praying for them as a group every week, etc etc etc.

Well, it was more inflicted by Carter who embraced the Shah to sell some fighter jets instead of embracing the democratic movement to overthrow him, but six of one half a dozen of the other.
