The Sochi attack.

I turned on the television this morning. It was already on Foxnews, I watch often to see their take and what they are choosing to cover. This morning they had some kind of terrorism expert talking about the "Sochi Attack". I figured I missed something in the overnight hours and flipped around, finding nothing about it I returned to Fox.

They were discussing, what the Sochi Attack WILL look like. The dude had a tube of toothpaste an was discussing how the attack would play out and what its implications will be.

The syntax was so interesting to me. They were treating it like it was a foregone conclusion.

Its interesting to me how that works, they are so focused on fear and how terror is always about to happen.

This line of 'thought' is one of the reasons the stock market has been so volatile. The whispers of a pending attack at the games continues to spread.

Could it happen? Of course.

Will it? I doubt it.

I think the FEAR of it happening is more what those terrorists that are opposed to the Russian government (and possibly American) want. They don't have to do anything, yet they get press... which tends to cover WHY they are 'upset'.

Since my wife must watch the NBC Nightly News on a daily basis I often have no choice but to watch along. They have been talking for several weeks about possible attacks in Sochi and have interviewed security experts and so on. So I know you think this is a Fox News phenomenon to talk about this but it has been on other channels as well Jarod if it will help you sleep better at night.

It has been in the news for many weeks as you stated. Garud just likes going off on his anti-Fox rants. That said, out of the 173 threads Garud has started, this is at least an interesting topic, despite his 'OMG OMG OMG Fox is making this shit up and no one else is talkin bout it'

You should really state this as your opinion. There is nothing to back this up substantively. I doubt that worries of Sochi are impacting the stock market to any great degree. But what a great theory huh?

I don't think so. I agree with you that it's unlikely to happen, or succeed if it does. But terrorism focused on the United States and Russia seems to be politically driven. Fear isn't what they want - it's change.

Given that they have repeatedly been talking about it on CNBC/Bloomberg etc... yeah... it is not just my opinion. An attack at the games would indeed hurt the global markets. It IS, as I stated, one of the reasons for recent volatility. It is not the sole reason, nor the biggest reason, but it is indeed a part of it. As I stated.

I agree that they want change and that the terrorism is absolutely politically driven. I believe the fear is what gets the world press talking about them and normally that includes the WHY they are upset and the WHAT they are fighting for. If the fear gets people talking about the change they want, that is good for them.

I think the toothpaste stuff would be an attack on travelers, not at Sochi but people who are going there.

Their viewers did their daily dose of fear!

It is more addictive than meth.

They go through actual withdrawal symptoms without it, then they come here to post.

and the OTHER networks that have been covering it?

Let me guess... just hard news reporting for them?

Fair enough. But fear's more effective if it's grounded in an incident.

The networks are casually talking about the possibility of an attack... then a well placed bomb, and woosh, suddenly nobody can ignore the problem. Granted, the media has plenty of liberty to frame it as a problem of individuals, but "intellectuals" certainly won't. An act of terrorism, as terrible as it is, is a powerful tool. A small, good thing.

EDIT: I am posting from the United States. I have no association with any groups engaging in terrorist activites, nor do I condone any acts of violence.

None of those talk about it as if an attack has already happened.

Link us up to where Fox said one already happened. All we have is your OP where you state that is what they said. Show us some evidence GARUD. The point is, people have been talking about this for the past couple of months. Every major network, many publications have all covered the potential for an attack.

I think you are exaggerating that they said it WILL happen. You are free to prove me wrong with an actual link that says they did.

I agree with Supercandy that the hype is something the terrorists want, they are still relevant as long as people are still afraid of them.

But, on the flip side, is it possible that so much hype will make them appear inept if they do not accomplish something... people may walk away with the feeling that we can control them and their ability to attack.

I agree, an actual attack would cement the story in the news... but it also gives them a negative in that they will have likely maimed/killed innocents to get their message across. If they can do so without an attack, while it would certainly not be as powerful, it would be perhaps more effective as it would not create the animosity. Just speculation on my part.

Alas, as you already know, I was watching live television. They did not say it did happen, they were using syntax that indicated that such an attack was a foregone conclusion. Already calling it "The Sochi Attack" and describing what it WILL look like.
