Think the country’s gotten worse since the 1950s — and want to go back?

A new poll provides an eye-opening glimpse into the values and motivations of the modern Republican Party, and the cultural and political forces that will drive the party faithful to the polls on Nov. 8.

The latest American Values poll by the Public Religion Research Institute also zooms in on the views of white evangelical Protestants who backed former President Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020, and who continue to speak with an outsized voice in GOP politics.

While “most Americans favor moving forward, a sizable minority yearn for a country reminiscent of the 1950s, embrace the idea that God created America to be a new promised land for European Christians, view newcomers as a threat to American culture, and believe that society has become too soft and feminine,” pollsters further observed.

That’s borne out by the data: Republicans, and more specifically white evangelical protestants, were more inclined to say the country is headed in the wrong direction (93 percent for both), and that the culture of the country has gotten worse since the 1950s (71 percent for evangelicals), the data showed.

Good luck to them as they cannot change demographics :)

Older Americans — those aged 65 and up — also are more likely to say life in the country has gotten worse than younger Americans. And that viewpoint matches media consumption, pollsters noted, with those who most trust conservative media (77 percent) and Fox News (70 percent) also feeling that way.

Most disturbingly, but not surprisingly, since the sacking of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, pollsters found that “people who agree that things have gotten so far off track that true American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our country are more likely than those who disagree with that statement to say the country has changed for the worse (71 percent vs. 43 percent).”

White voters without a college degree, who made up a key part of former President Donald Trump’s coalition, and who are now a key part of the GOP’s base, were more likely than college-educated white voters (53-34 percent) to say newcomers pose a threat, the poll found.

“majorities of all other religious groups agree that white supremacy remains a problem, including Black Protestants (88 percent), Hispanic Catholics (73 percent), those affiliated with non-Christian religions (72 percent), those unaffiliated with any religious tradition (71 percent), and white mainline Protestants (54 percent), as well as half of white Catholics (50 percent),” pollsters found.

The poll’s findings have profound implications for American democracy, which already is under threat, with one party, and its most fervent adherents, opposed to the religious and cultural pluralism that has made the country stronger, and in denial of the larger demographic forces that are going to continue to move it in that same direction.

Did even bother to read the cited poll? It was done by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI). It's a who's who of Leftist / Democrat issues-- Abortion, gun control, climate change, and, of course, threats to "democracy."

Nothing about the economy, energy prices, supply chain issues...

So, it's just another poll that really is out of touch with main street America.

No its only gotten worse since "wokeness"

Common theme throughout American History, the “return to normalcy” has been a major campaign slogan more than once, the older generations always view the younger as useless, “back when I was a kid”

If one had to trace where America’s polarity began I’d say in the 1980’s with the abandonment of the Fairness Doctrine, not just the act itself, but the flood gates it opened up, as Limbaugh himself stated, that day made his career. What it did was legitimatize demagoguery, from Newt in the halls of Congress to the rise of infotainment, especially when media mercenaries discovered they could pimp hate and division to turn themselves into millionaires

you think fomenting wwIII is a step forward, genocide-boy?

In the 1950s we did not have shooter drills in schools. We did not have mass shootings on the level of today, not even close.

So the problems they did not cause and have to be fixed by foreign nations is main street? Putins war caused oil prices and food prices to climb. The economy is healthy and jobs are being created.

And Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my

I loved the 1950s, but the polio epidemic, the Jim Crow, and the wide-spread illiteracy were not among the things that I liked, even as a child.

Rocky Marciano--good.
Ted Willians--good.
Frank Sinatra-good.
The '55 T-Bird--good.

Strom Thurman? Not so good.

But the latter's disciples are everywhere today. We call them "trumpanzees."

And Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my

As if SCOTUS Christian Nation "serve the Pope or die" Federal Lynching KKK churchstate of hate fiefdom drug trafficking enforcement would impress Israel as controlling "one nation under God with equal justice under law" while Islamidiotocracy Mohammed pedophilia would have standing granted to nuke Temple Mount in order to make Israel pay as those Christiananality pedophilia thieving National Archives purchased US Constitution Bill of Rights - old glory - old testament - absentee voting ballots arsonists more perfect union crusade - jihad of 9/11.

And Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my

So those ChristHitlers think it's a worthy Wizard of Oz Lions and Tigers and Bears "one nation under God with equal justice under law", oh my what a national religion of Christiananality pedophilia more perfect union to Islamidiotocracy Mohammed pedophilia protected & served by their Federal Lynching KKK churchstate of hate fiefdom drug trafficking monopoly.
