I actually would have to agree that these are fairly innocuous comments.

However, I wish that Christians in general would rethink the importance of "homosexuality" in their message and priorities. Given that only a few obscure passages in a huge tome deal with it, it's certainly not something that I would ascribe as part of the 'Christian message.' There is much more talk about tolerance & love.

Im sure he is relying upon the more numerous passages regarding marriage. Christianity doesnt limit marriage to heterosexual couples because homosexuality is an abomination, but instead because only men and women can be fathers and mothers of their children.
 
Jesus had long hair, wore dresses, loved everyone, never dated women, and never wed.

Seems like he'd be a better judge of gay rights than marriage.

The mayor added: “I make mistakes all the time. That’s a Menino-ism.”


The Herald first reported last week that Menino warned “it will be very difficult” for Chick-fil-A to obtain licenses for a restaurant in Boston.


The Atlanta-based chicken chain has been eyeing a space near the Freedom Trail and across the street from City Hall, among other locations, for its first eatery in Boston.
“I sent (the landlord) a letter, but that’s all. There’s no pressure by me to allow this place to be rented,” he said. Menino acknowledged Cathy’s freedom to express his views, but was unapologetic about his own tough stance that’s become national news.

To be a Christian means to be a follower of Jesus.
I know a few real Christians I know far more who just use the religion to justify their fear and hatred, etc.
Real Christians are people I am prouf to have as friends. The users I have no use for.
And I do not believe in any god or afterlife of any kind.

The words he chose to make his beliefs known aren't as important as the fact that he supports an anti gay agenda.
As such, those who don't agree with said agenda, will choose to boycott Chick Fil A, as well as anyone who runs their ads.

True. A follow up question: Does the fact that he made such a statement mean that mayors (Boston's mayor backtracked today but I heard Rahm spouting off) can block the establishment of a Chick Fil A in their city by refusing permits and/or using other methods?

I don't believe that's a direction any local govt. wants to take.

Of course, the local population will determine the issue better than the local building dept. can.

To be a Christian is a lot of different things. I come from a family where all the men (on my moms side) are ministers. Now, they're all upstanding gentlemen, but a belief that Jesus is the messiah is all that is 'required' to be a Christian. I'm a dedicated polytheistic pagan, so I have no real concern. I'm just pointing out that Christianity has a fuck ton of violence in both the liturgy and in the foundation and first 1700 years (out of 2000).
