This Is Who’s Really Driving the Decline in Interest in Liberal Arts Education

When students realize their own humanity is at stake in their education, they are deeply invested in it. The problem with liberal education in today’s academy does not lie with our students. The real threat to liberal learning is from an administrative class that is content to offer students far less than their own humanity calls for — and deserves.

Sadly, this education has fared less well with my university’s new administration. After the former president and provost departed this year, the newly installed provost informed me that the Honors College must “go in a different direction.” That meant eliminating the entire dean’s office and associated staff positions as well as many of our distinctive programs and — through increased class sizes — effectively ending our small seminars. Thats actually a good question. Look at you engaging. Gold star for you. Because a lot of what they produce is useless garbage. Crippling student debt, perverse cultural ideas and most often outside of the actual sciences few students work to their degree.

So, no one taught you math or English in school? Where did they go to know how to do that? College.

First of all I was speaking English long before I went to school and my father owned a business and i learned all the math Ive ever used since from him

no it didnt but i didnt learn anything that has since proven to be significantly useful after that.

its funny one the most useful things that I learned in high school that i still remember is Mr Mulvaney teaching us how to fill out our taxes. I hadnt started working from my dad yet but I got a job washing dishes at a local dinner at 16.

Lots of people went into literature because they love books and reading, only to realize that they made a huge mistake because that is not what literature at the universities is about anymore.

People who go into history because they want to understand what went on in the old days make the same mistake.

Sounds like you must have wasted your time in college if that is how it worked out for you.

Every president in my lifetime had a liberal arts undergraduate education, with the exception of Jimmy Carter. Probably most senators and vice presidents too.

Mathematicians, physicists, and engineers don't seem to be cut out for national leadership positions.
