Getting the liver out of the husband, without killing him, or damaging the liver, has to cost money. In America, you cannot sell an organ. But doing a major surgery removing a liver, and keeping the donor alive after the surgery, is not free. The recovery for the donor is six to eight weeks. Several weeks of that could be in the hospital. The surgery is lengthy and detailed.

Some of America is doing well, it is the democratic parts. But I agree some medical prices make no sense, but conservatives balk at so called socialist solutions. So there you have it, you made your bed sleep there.

Are you prepared to tell 50% of Americans who don't currently pay federal income tax they will have to start paying to get the perks the "top nations" get? And pay a VAT on top of that. Over the past 4 decades there have been no greater opponents to a VAT in this country than democrats.

My insurance pays a relatively small percentage of the actual charges.

The reasons this costs so much:

Requirements that hospitals provide services regardless of a person's ability to pay
People who can't pay their medical bills are forgiven by the government and hospitals are forced to write those off as losses
Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, and other government run health insurance programs bully hospitals into providing services at below actual costs.
Most people pay these bills with health insurance that spreads the cost so they personally don't see it.

The result of the above is that hospitals inflate the cost of things to cover all the losses they incur due to government meddling in the health care market and use health insurance providers to cover those costs where the public at large isn't angry about them.

I have Tricare. That's not what other "top nations" have. They have the VA healthcare system. It's what you use when you don't have anything better to use. For those that can afford it, they avoid such government systems like the plague they are and use private providers.

Tricare is an employer-style health insurance program and you pay a fee each month just as you would for insurance through any other employer. You then use private providers in the community where you live, just like most other people do when you are on an employer health insurance plan.

Most other countries have a public healthcare system run by the government and paid for out of taxes. These programs are highly variable in quality, usually poorly managed, and often have excessive wait times for indifferent quality services, if those services are available at all.
