According to the article in your link, free markets in healthcare are not "contradictory to the laws of economics", and in fact have helped contain costs:

Spending on health services has increased dramatically in all of the world's high- and middle-income countries, leading to increased concerns about cost-containment, quality and responsiveness. A solid majority approve of the public option as of a bunch of polls that came out yesterday. Even Rassmussen had a majority in the mid-50s for approval of the public option.

American support for universal/nationalized healthcare has remained at about 60% for at least a decade.

2) Plenty of Republican ideas were accepted by the House Energy and Commerce Committee and I'm sure that plenty were accepted by the other House committees as well.
