Five ways to go green from Al Gore

(Oprah.com) -- You can become a part of the fight against global warming. Former Vice President Al Gore shares the five things you can buy now that will help solve the climate crisis -- and save you a few bucks! Plus, more of his easy going green tips!

Five things you can buy

1. Compact fluorescent lightbulbs

These energy-efficient bulbs cost less than $4 and are produced by major corporations like GE. If every household in America switched five regular light bulbs for five fluorescent bulbs, it would be the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the highways for a full year.

I already do a lot of this stuff. Al would totally love me.

This is seriously the bottom of it.

The only one of those I didn't do already was the water heater, and that is because mine is not electric.

I have the little squiggly bulbs everywhere.
1/2 of my house is a mess right now. Having the inside walls ripped out re-insulated and thermo windows put back in.
Already have about 18" of inslulation in the attic.

Just had new Bosch super quiet efficient DW installed.
Is much nicer than any 2 legged DW, self included.

Also replacing the wiring and adding other cables, audio, video, etc...

It is darned nice to be able to pay someone else to do all that :D

I do four of the five. I live in a condo complex and do not control the outdoor lighting (they do use energy efficient, but not solar). The rest are easy and should be done strictly from an economic standpoint.... the fact they benefit the environment is just an added plus :)

So I guess being cheap has finally paid off spiritually for you?

I love solar outdoor lighting it's very pretty, I think.

ANd if it isn't, should we enact policy which will devastate the economy and erroneously shift market share to flim flam GREEN corporations?
Who said anything about policy here? These were tips on what you could do to save money and release less pollution.

But indulging dimstresses like Darla in this line of thinking only encourages their totalitarian tendencies.

Your own personal responsibility toward others, or even just youerself, has nothing to do with "indulging Darla". Using other's suggestions as an excuse to ignore your own responsibility is a weak excuse.

Should we pollute solely because other people suggest laws? I prefer to make the laws unnecessary long before such a law is suggested, rather than just implement a negative reaction regardless of any consequences or responsibility.

I choose a personal policy of cheaper lighting, less power usage, and less pollution, not because Darla suggested laws, but because I want to live in a cleaner, less expensive and fiscally responsible environment of my own making.

Everything has to do with darla.

I also do nearly all of those, plus try to follow the suggestions in the body of the article following the five points. I'm changing out a lot of the lighting in the house as well, and substituting the energysaver bulbs in those as well as in existing fixtures as incandescent bulbs burn out.

I'm using low-wattage bulbs and have found that it takes a while for the 40W equivalents to become bright enough to see well in a dark room. (I've bought the enclosed squigglies for the ceiling fan, e.g. and they do take a long time.)

We also try to limit water usage, don't leave the tap running, e.g., and always turn the temperature to a low use setting at bedtime and when we leave the house.

The baggers at our local supermarket didn't know at first what to make of my collection of canvas bags. Now they give a 5-cent rebate for each one. I understand that in SF they've started charging people who don't bring their own bags.

LMAO.............

anyone who patronizes Al (Sp-4 Army Times writer..thanks to Daddies intevention)) Gore and did not serve in the same area of VN...has not a clue as to what a BS'er Al is and was..he is so full of caca...That he was called 'Walking Eagle' by troops in Nam who were 'Native Americans'...end of story!....( Walking Eagle-means ..too full of shit to fly)

I haven't had the impression that he's trying to take any individual credit for these points; they've all been around for a long, long time and have been embraced for years by many of us. I was on Capitol Hill for the Earth Day celebration in 1990 and remember signing a pledge that included most of these points. (Except of course the light bulbs, which weren't developed at the time, nor were the EnergyStar appliances).

It all just makes good sense to take good care of the planet that supports us. Apart from its being the right thing to do, as of right now, we don't have anywhere else to go!

i think al gore needs to make a life size blowup sex doll... he would make millions, i cant belive how many people hump this tool
