They say this is the scene that won the job of Gunnery Sgt Hartman for Remey. They had him stand in for the original actor they hired and he preceded to ad lib this scene for ten minutes cussing out D'Onofrio without repeating himself. You notice how Gomer keeps looking at Hartman and then looks down, looks at Hartman and looks down, it was because he was cracking up.
