Opera-goer spends night locked in toilet
January 17, 2008
An 84-year-old music fan had no option but to spend a night at the Estonian National Opera after she ended up locked in a toilet, the prestigious Baltic venue said Thursday. The woman decided to take a comfort break before leaving the building at the end of a three-and-a-half-hour Sunday afternoon performance of Rossini's comic opera "Cinderella", said Eero Raun, adviser to the venue's manager. With no evening event scheduled, a staff member did the rounds of the building, turning out the lights and locking the toilets, apparently without checking if any of the cubicles were occupied.
"It's not the first time that an opera-goer has been locked in the toilet in Tallinn," the venue manager noted noted. "The last one was when an American who was very drunk got locked in in November.
We still don't know how he ended up locked in, but he did a lot of damage and behaved very violently before anyone noticed and the door was unlocked."
