Trump admin is ‘trying to put out a fire they started’ at Weather Service as a cold, snowy winter looms

The National Weather Service is working to hire back hundreds of positions laid off or otherwise cut by the Trump administration, but it’s progressing at a snail’s pace, with about 80 final job offers accepted for meteorologists, hydrologists and other specialized staff.

The agency received permission in late July to add a total of 450 people after about 550 were cut by DOGE earlier this year. The decision to authorize new hires came after lawmakers and citizens expressed concerns about how the NWS cuts would impact public safety.

The slow hiring means the Weather Service is going into yet another critical storm season with more than a dozen forecast offices forced to get by with serious staff vacancies, potentially undermining the accuracy of forecasts and warnings during powerful winter storms.

Similar concerns were raised ahead of hurricane season. Hurricanes, including three Category 5 storms, luckily stayed away from making landfall in the U.S.

“The administration is trying to put out a fire that they started,” said Rick Spinrad, who led NOAA during the Biden administration. “The 450 hires for the NWS won’t even cover the full shortfall.”

My doctor at Madigan took a buyout that was idiotically on offer during a doctor shortage, and now the first appt available for my PCM is in April.

Fuck you asshole. You supported the assassination of your president so, fuck you!

Since obamacare, small clinics and hospitals all over the country have been forced into buyouts due to excessive regulations and paperwork. Your story is not the exception.

Why are doctors leaving?
My last doctor took a Trump buyout.....as for how the Army is doing in attracting doctors in a doctor shortage I am not sure about.....I have not investigated. I have heard that what attracts doctors is not just money and benefits.....work environment matters a lot.

I stay far away from the VA and use local clinics, but I have seen too many good doctors over the age of 50 just take the buyout and ride the wave at a lower programmed salary.

There is a terrible shortage of qualified medical personnel in the military. This was made much worse by a change in how the Reserves were being used starting in the mid-90's. Call ups of reservists to active duty became frequent, and it was even put out that this could be expected in the future. Most professional and skilled reserve personnel, who usually had serious, good paying private sector full-time jobs and careers, quit or retired ASAP to avoid having their main source of income destroyed by recurring call ups for a year at a time.

This gutted the reserves of what had been, previously, a major source of highly skilled personnel, particularly in the medical profession. Lawyers, engineers, journeymen, craftsmen, high end technicians all left to save their civilian careers which were far more important to them. It left the reserves filled with individuals that had a contractual obligation to serve 2 to 4 years and personnel that were low skill or wage job types in civilian life.

For the medical services, all the doctors, nurses, and other medical types that the reserves had provided on a regular basis to supplement the active duty side of things disappeared. This just made shortages on the active side far worse. It was a shortsighted and idiotic decision by the highest levels of command who didn't, or couldn't, see that for skilled, professional, and well-paid individuals in the reserves the military came second to their own careers in civilian life. They didn't mind serving when it was really needed, but weren't going to be used as a 'temp service' of part-time workers on call through a revolving door.

However this issue here is the Army attracting civilian doctors.

This is an attempt at a work-around. The problem is it's likely that the civilian doctors are really PHS or ones that had some deal to get their college loans paid off by doing something like 4 to 6 years of service of this sort. That's a bandaid on an amputation. The problem remains that the military pays for shit and working conditions suck for medical personnel and they quit the second they can to go to the private sector if they're any good at what they do.

One thing I do know that Madigan took away nurse support for my diabetes doctor.......speaking of working conditions.

That whole fucking thing was just a giant PR stunt gone wrong. A disaster for every agency effected and all they associate with (which is us).

Dude, you need to get over that shit. We all wish the "assassin" had been a better shot.
