But why is he such a lying blowhard? Presumably he has a choice. Even a person of his all-consuming egocentricity must be able to see that it alienates people who might otherwise be inclined to support him. Is his opinion of the American people so low that he thinks many of them want an ignorant, lying blowhard for President?

His niece Mary believes he developed it to win the approval of his father, the ‘high-functioning sociopath’ Fred. His sister, judge Maryanne, said: "His goddamned lying, oh my God … The lying, holy shit” and “It's the phoniness of it all, the phoniness and cruelty” - but offers no explanation.

He has never tolerated anyone around him who will tell him the truth. On some level he is quite aware of his many, many shortcomings but he covers them up with bluster, bullying, and braggadocio. Anyone who dares to tell him "Sir, you can't do that" is shown the door. Most of us who are old enough have known someone like him at some point in their life. Maybe it was a boss or coworker, a neighbor, an in-law, even a spouse. Inside they are weak and scared. That can make them very dangerous -- especially if they become president and have nearly unlimited power to wreak misery and suffering on others.
