President Trump has extended the waiver on the Jones Act. For those who don’t know The Jones Act is a Great Depression Era law that was intended to protect American jobs for American Seaman by not permitting shipping to inland ports unless they the vessels are crewed by a majority of American seamen.
Though intended to protect jobs it has had the opposite affect. It has strongly had a negative impact on trade and in particularly in the industrial Great Lakes region as it created a significant drop in international trade in the Great Lakes region and had a significant negative impact on industry and played no small part in the industrial decline of the Great Lakes region during the rust belt era.
The only problem is this is just a temporary half measure. I would respectfully ask all that you get behind lobbying the Trump administration and their congressional representatives to repeal the anachronistic and obsolete Jones act which would have a tremendous impact on increasing international trade and job creation not just in the Great Lakes region but all of our inland ports.
