Trump floats the DOGE dividend idea

President Donald Trump has considered a "DOGE Dividend" for U.S. taxpayers.

On February 19, 2025, during a speech at the Future Investment Initiative Summit in Miami, Trump publicly floated the idea of distributing 20% of the savings achieved by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—led by Elon Musk—back to American citizens as a taxpayer refund, with another 20% earmarked for reducing the national deficit.

He described the potential savings as "incredible," citing "billions, even hundreds of billions of dollars," and framed it as a "new concept" under consideration.

The idea originated from James Fishback, CEO of Azoria and an outside DOGE adviser, who proposed on X that 20% of DOGE’s targeted $2 trillion in savings—roughly $400 billion—be returned to approximately 79 million taxpaying households, equating to about $5,000 per household. Musk responded to Fishback’s post on February 18, 2025, saying, "Will check with the President," signaling his intent to discuss it with Trump.

Trump’s Miami remarks the next day confirmed he’s weighing the proposal.

This isn’t a done deal—Trump said it’s "under consideration," meaning no final decision has been made.
