President Donald Trump on Friday said he had not discussed special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe with Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, the man who Trump appointed this week to oversee inquiry.

Whitaker has come under increasing scrutiny since his appointment on Wednesday because of his previous criticism of Mueller's investigation.

People close to the president said that Whitaker's public skepticism of the probe is what led Trump to first take an interest in him, according to a Wednesday report in The New York Times.​

"I didn't speak to Matt Whitaker about it, I don't know Matt Whitaker," Trump said.

The comments come as Whitaker faces increasing scrutiny over his criticism of Mueller's investigation.

Whitaker, a Trump ally, has accused Mueller of "going too far," and once posted a message on Twitter referring to Mueller's prosecutors as a "lynch mob."

Trump just spent a hard and fast 20 minutes DISTANCING himself from Whitaker.

His press conference before he boarded the helicopter this AM was a disgrace. He distanced himself from Whitaker, attacked Obama and Michelle and insulted another female reporter claiming her question was stupid.. He NEVER stops to think.

the question WAS stupid. the woman asked is he was going to starve Mueller of funding.
He's been specific he would not interfere.

He should "distance himself" - why would you not want that?

Whitaker has been on TV several times saying the AG should STARVE the Muller investigation.. Nothing stupid about that question at all.. Most Americans want an answer since Trump chose Whitaker.

that was in a role as a commentator. The stupid part was Trump just specifically said in yesterdays pressor he's not going to touch it. If he did -he would be sucessfully impeached. Trump gets that.

Wrong again. Whitaker said on TV that that was how he would deal with it and then Trump appointed him. That was a germane question that merited an answer.

Exactly, Trump won’t do it, he has a new hit man. I also abhor his policy of picking people who say nice things about him, instead of people who are truly qualified.
