President-elect Trump said Sunday evening on social media that the U.S. owning Greenland “is an absolute necessity,” in a statement announcing Ken Howery as his nominee to serve as ambassador to Denmark.

Howery, a tech investor who co-founded PayPal, was ambassador to Sweden in the previous Trump administration.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump said in the Truth Social post.

In late 2019, Trump said that buying Greenland, which is owned by Denmark, was “strategically” interesting, triggering an angry response from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Not even president yet, and he is already alienating and insulting allies.

This sounds like the ravings of a madman in an asylum. It would be hilarious if it wasn't such a serious issue that we have a completely delusional dictator wannabe about to be sworn in as president. My sincerest apologies to Greenland and Denmark, Panama, and Canada. Please remember that half of us are still sane and didn't vote for this nutjob.

This is not going to happen, who the hell does Trump think he is?!! Trump better be glad the Dutch let the U.S. have an air base there?!!

Is he wrong?
trump is using the language of war, saying it is "necessary" and therefore a reason to go to war over. he may be accidentally using the language of war, in copying Hitler and Putin, his heroes.

But he is definitely wrong. America, and the world in general, will be fine if we do not invade Greenland.

If we do invade Greenland, I assume it will be a quick victory, followed by a slow defeat. Our alliances would be ruined, and which would put us in imminent threat.

Who said anything about "invading" Greenland, Salty Walty?

Well, Y O U did.

Who else?

The Dutch should be grateful the US beat Germany and let them have the Netherlands back.
The Danish were not returned Iceland at the end of WWII, because Iceland had decided to be independent. Greenland had decided to be returned to Denmark.

I do not think US troops had reached Denmark by the time of German surrender. Even had they, claiming Danish land 80 years later is just stupid, along with being unethical.

I thought Trump was elected to lower the price groceries and control the border access, not imperial conquest?!! So is Trump ready to take Greenland and the Panama Canal by force?!! Who the hell does Trump think he is a renegade Putin? If I was in the military, I would not fight to seize Greenland or the Panama Canal?!!

And WHY DID DENMARK get control of DENMARK BACK at the end of WWII? Which country was the most pivotal in winning WW2

Trump has offered to buy Greenland from the Netherlands there is NOTHING unethical about that. Do you think the US buying Alaska was unethical?
