Donald Trump has fired the country's top election cybersecurity official. The president announced on Twitter that Chris Krebs, director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, has been “terminated”. The announcement followed the release of a statement by government security officials describing the recent election as “the most secure in American history”.
Trump tweeted: “The recent statement by Chris Krebs on the security of the 2020 election was highly inaccurate, in that there were massive improprieties and fraud.”
Yeah, Krebs and his colleagues should have said: “The recent election was the most secure in American history, apart from massive fraud that robbed Mr Trump of his rightful victory.” That would have been OK.
Krebs has been running the agency since it was set up in the wake of Russian (or Ukrainian, if you believe Giuliani) cyber-meddling in the 2016 election. His work has been praised in Congress.
