If you thought the $400,000 salary presidents get every year they’re in office was great, you’ll be blown away by how much former presidents are still entitled to. Every year for the rest of their lives, former commanders in chief get pensions that match the salary of a Cabinet Secretary—about $211,000 in 2018.

Not only do ex-presidents get pension checks, but they also get to expense the money they use to pay for office staff. When they first leave office, they get up to $150,000 for staffing every year, but after the first 30 months, that number drops to $96,000 per year.

Former presidents will be public figures for the rest of their lives, and they’re entitled to a lifetime of Secret Service protection. Their spouses get the same benefits (unless an ex-spouse remarries), and their kids can get free security until they turn 16.

Just like any other federal employee, presidents can keep their health benefits through retirement as long as they’ve been with the government for five years or more—in most presidents’ cases, that means serving two terms.

All past President's get it, understandable, the only difference with Trump is that he will find a way to personally profit off of it, guarantee his assigned Secret Service detail will be booked at all of his resorts at season ceiling rates
 
Every former POTUS should have secret service protection for life. It's not to protect his life, but to protect state secrets. If someone were to capture a retired POTUS--especially one as wimpy as Trump--they would undoubtedly draw out all kinds of secrets with torture and other forms of intimidation.

Disagreed on Secret Service protection, at least while in office, but thanks for the insight about 5 years.

My guess is that Trump will get rid of his detail because he's paranoid and doesn't want anyone listening in on his dealings. Trump will lose executive privilege the moment his successor takes the oath.

Removing Trump's Secret Service detail. As I wrote, I think Trump will throw out the detail or minimize their presence so he won't be "watched". Good. Save the country some money. I just disagree with leaving an official vulnerable simply because of political differences.

Trump the tax dodging sociopath lied and over 220,000 Americans are dead which makes him undeserving of publicly funded protection. I don't see that as "political differences."
