Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort is believed to have served as a “back channel” between the presidential campaign and Russia, a lawyer for Trump’s Department of Justice disclosed Thursday.

According to Bloomberg, U.S. prosecutors made the allegation while defending special counsel Robert Mueller’s decision to indict Manafort on charges of money laundering and acting as an agent of a foreign government.

Manafort’s lawyers argued the charges are outside of Mueller’s mandate, which includes an obligation to investigate “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation” of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Justice Department lawyer Michael Dreeben told U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson that Manafort “had long-standing ties to Russia-backed politicians.”

“Did they provide back channels to Russia?” Dreeben asked. “Investigators will naturally look at those things.”

I remember an old abbot and Costello skit where abbot is fishing. He catches his first fish and then uses it for bait to catch a bigger fish. It goes on until he hooks the bigly fish. Trumps will be the last fish to be hooked. In fact he will swallow the bait.

That's not proof of collusion, only that Manafort has contacts in Russia, I believe that have to establish such to justify their intial interest in him. From there the mandate does allow investigating "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation," implying such as another illegality as money laundering which they seem to be pursuing with Manafort

Collusion is next to impossible to prove, you have to establish quid pro quo, meaning you have to prove Russia got something in return, and the Russians aren't going to tell him anything. Besides, collusion, on its own, isn't a crime

Mueller's mandate specified investigating "any links or coordination between the Russian Governmemt and individuals associated with the campaign of Donald Trump," doesn't necessary mean collusion, the media, especially right wing media, keep throwing collusion around as the denominator defining if Trump is guilty of anything

Looks like the DOJ is on the right track. just what did Manafort with his Russian connections, do for Trumps campaign. You will find out soon, honey bunch.

Collusion, obstruction and money laundering. Those are the qualifications for a Republican president. You rightys have your man.
