Ukraine claims successful drone attacks against Russian forces

"On Sunday, the Armed Forces of Ukraine released footage showing the destruction of armor by a drone, and said it was carried out against a Russian BUK surface-to-air missile system."

Drones have been cheap game changers in recent years. They completely changed the course of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War, and has had a disturbing effect in Arabia.

If properly implemented, a much smaller force could obliterate a much larger force. If I were Putin, this would be my greatest fear.

Man...when you are starting to cheer your successful drone attacks?
You know your side is probably in trouble.

Drones are the tanks, or planes of the 21st century. They can be used to turn the tide of war in unexpected ways. In the Nagorno-Karabakh war, Azerbaijani was surprisingly victorious by using relatively cheap drones. Iranians have released open source plans for drones that have been very successful in Arabia.

And none of those are self flying drones, or have anything interesting technologically. Cell phones have lowered the price of censors by 99%. Artificial intelligence is coming of age...

I am not cheering so much as fascinated by it all. There is a real chance that Russia's $10 million tanks, and $40 million jets could be taken out by $10k drones. If I were Putin, that would be my great fear.

I'm at a loss why MORE Drones haven't been provided.

American drones are extremely high priced, good, but not great. They are not that innovative. Israel, Iran, Turkey, and others have made some amazing breakthroughs combining low price cell phone technology with innovative designs to do great things (or terrible things depending on which side you are on). The technology is all in its infancy, so sometimes it is great, and sometimes it fails completely.

Israel and Turkey are slightly selective in who they sell their weapons to. Iran is the opposite. They have made their drones open source, which means anyone can download their designs and make themselves a drone fleet.

No one knows who will develop swarming drones that use AI, and ad hoc networks... But I am sure someone will. Maybe not this year, but within a few years.

Are drones being delivered to Ukraine from Israel and Turkey as I write this? Maybe. Are Ukrainians building Iranian style drones from downloaded plans as I write this? Maybe. Are Ukrainians developing their own drones? Maybe. Are the Ukrainians doing nothing with drones? Maybe.

"How Ukraine Is Using Drones Against Russia"
https://www.cfr.org/in-brief/how-ukraine-using-drones-against-russia

"Ukraine first purchased six of these medium-altitude, tactical uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAV) from Turkey in a $69 million deal in 2019. Each Bayraktar TB2 system consists of six aerial vehicles (or drones), two ground control stations, and related support equipment, so the initial purchase was for one complete system. The UAVs, which are Ukraine’s only armed UAV capability, have a range of up to three hundred kilometers, last up to twenty-seven hours, and can carry up to four laser-guided munitions."

That is definitely what the Ukrainians hope will happen, and it may well be what happens. I certainly hope it is what happens...

But I have a bit of fear that it is what will happen. We are the only global superpower. The few other powers that can project themselves globally, mainly just France and UK, are relatively close to us. If anyone with $100k and a grudge can project airpower globally, it might become a scarier world.

Iranian open source drones attacked Saudi oil facilities in 2019, destroying 5.7 million barrels a day in production (out of a global 100 barrels a day production). This was a huge attack, endangering the world oil supply. It appears that the drones were from plans produced by the Iranians, but the actual drones were made by Houthis rebels. Iran has made those plans open to anyone.

That means that the alt right(or antifa) could produce drones, and attack America from within. That means Mexican rebels could attack America. Even Canadian Quebec independence terrorists could create a fleet of drones. If we want to get very creative maybe even Justin Bieber fans... The number of threats suddenly become infinite. We kind of knew the Japanese were a possible threat before Pearl Harbor, but we could never see Justin Bieber fans coming.

I nominate Walt for Minister of Ukraine Defense.

Drones are a big topic of conversation in the AI community. I shy away from such talk, because it seems like something I do not want to be involved in... But there are many people worldwide working on drones, and most are not involved in nation states. For all we know, there might be a hobbyist from Cleveland, or a graduate student from Georgia Tech who will design a great drone. IT WILL NOT BE ME!!! I cannot make that clear enough. If the NSA is reading this, WALT IS NOT WORKING ON DRONES!!!

John Phillips a student at Princeton University was able to design a nuclear bomb in 1976. Drones are much more simple to design these days. Most of the parts are publicly available, and relatively cheap.

A truly diabolical mastermind could use this to great advantage. Build some cheap drones using Iranian plans and parts from China and other nations. Arm them with bombs/missiles, also made of parts from China. Use them to destroy a couple of air bases *within* Russia. Wait while their scientists pinpoint the bits left over as being of Chinese origin. Watch them war with each other while your country sits back with a cold beer.

OK. Check. I've read between the lines here and got:
1. Walt is working for NSA designing Drones for Ukraine that can only be traced back to the Quebecois or Kurds of Syria.

Great work, Walt!

Walt for Ukrainian Minister of Defense!

NO!!! I am not really worried, but I am at an age that when the topic of conversation gets too specific about killer drones, I will walk away.

We started to sent the successful Turkic students to US universities long ago. These hardworking Turkic students who won the trust of the Americans partipicated to the some educational institutions that not everyone can enter and take part in projects. These patriotic students who get a pretty good education there lead the Turkish technology today.

Recently Max Tegmark from Massachusetts Institute of Technology said that he is ashamed that these Turks were studied in their institutions.
