House Speaker Kevin McCarthy expressed his disapproval, labeling the incident “unacceptable.” The Incident and Video Evidence The Rushingbrook Children’s Choir, hailing from Greenville, South Carolina, had been invited to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” in the National Statuary Hall of the Capitol Building on May 26. However, video footage of the event shows the conductor, David Rasbach, abruptly cutting off the young singers before they could complete their patriotic performance.
David Rasbach revealed that the interruption occurred after a female Capitol Police officer directed a congressional staffer to end the children’s performance immediately. Rasbach emphasized that the choir had obtained permission from South Carolina Republican Representatives William Timmons and Joe Wilson, as well as the House Speaker’s office.
House Speaker McCarthy Expresses Outrage Reacting to the incident, House Speaker McCarthy expressed his outrage on Friday and expressed his desire to have the children return to perform in Congress. McCarthy took to Twitter to share his sentiments, stating, “Just learned kids were interrupted while singing our National Anthem at the Capitol. Unacceptable. These children were welcomed by my office because your Capitol is back open, particularly for school groups.”
In response, the Capitol Police informed on Friday that singing is generally not allowed within the Capitol Building, and they were unaware of McCarthy’s approval for the performance. They explained that due to a miscommunication, the Capitol Police were unaware of the Speaker’s Office granting permission.
The agency issued an apology to the choir, acknowledging the impact on their rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and their visit to Capitol Hill.
