An elderly married couple said they were forced out of their home, leaving heirlooms, their grandson’s toys and medical equipment piled on the street in Vancouver.
Marlene Berg, 83, admits they owed money and expected to leave but never thought they’d be forced to literally pick up the pieces of their livelihood in the process.
“Very hurt. It’s starting all over,” Marlene said after being evicted from her home after 15 years without missing a payment.
Her husband, Tom Berg, 82, is a veteran who has become bedridden with multiple disabilities. They lived in the home with their adult son and 9-year-old grandson.
When the couple’s water heater broke in January, Marlene said they fell behind on rent after Tom’s extended stay in a nursing facility.
Despite investing about $20,000 in repairs, Marlene said the courts ordered them out by September 2. Days later, they watched as their belongings were tossed to the street.
“It’s heartbreaking… just watching them throw stuff, just throw stuff,” Marlene said.
“All that stuff is broken, it’s rained on, people were going through it,” She said. “We need to come together as a community and help this family and help all the other families that are going through the same. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about the eviction, it’s about humanity.”
