Another Chevy Volt fire risk? Power cords may ignite

The biggest difference between the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf may be the $150 price difference between their 120-volt charge cords.

Chevrolet Volt owners have been reporting a different problem for months: Overheating and melting of the cord used to charge the car from standard 120-volt household electrical sockets. While GM says the cords are safe and blames the problems on the owners’ wiring, it has replaced an unknown number of cords and made changes to its design.

Eh; growing pains, nothing more. Ever see all of those old clips of people trying to fly around the time of the Wright Bros.?

It's easy to pick on failures when something new is being developed.

Lol growing pains. Ie hawkish statement of the decade. Not shocking democrats are clueless on business.
Ok full disclosure I can pick shitty alternative energy investments right up there with obuma; but I'm not using taxpayer dollars. Billions on electric because dummytards (read democrats) cried wolf on something other than only propeller head geek demand for the electric car(read golf cart in a car suit) in the 90's.
so total fail on Jetson's volt, total fail on solyndra. Not total fail on creating buggyman of oil companies (read the ones who actually get us to work daily).

hahaha....growing pains....??? WTF are you talking about .....do you see a lot of homes burning down that have normal wiring, correctly installed.....

The safe current for a particular size wire is still a mystery at GM...??? You gotta be kidding or much dumber than I thought......

Send this in to the GM engineers....they will be eternally grateful to you...

  • Ohm's Law
    P = E x I.....or V = I x R
    • According to Ohm's Law, power is directly proportional to resistance. The resistance of a wire is, in turn, inversely proportional to its cross-sectional area, so the gauge of a wire determines how it behaves electronically.
    Cross Sectional Area

    • On the AWG scale, wires double or half in cross-sectional area for every three steps up or down the scale. A 10AWG copper wire has a resistance of about 1 milliohm (mΩ) per foot, 13AWG wire has a resistance of about 2mΩ per foot and so on.
    Voltage Drop

    • Incorrectly selecting a wire gauge can result in an unacceptable drop in voltage between a power supply and a component. You can expect the voltage in a 10AWG wire carrying a current of 10 amperes to drop by 2 volts over a distance of 100 feet.

The bold is hilarious. The DOE loan program has spent about $36 billion, 4% of which has gone bad. If you can point me to a single venture cap firm with that sort of success rate, I'll eat my hat.

Hijacking the thread, pinhead ?

He said Solyndra was a total fail and it was a total fail.....case closed

Its pretty hard to fuck up a power cord.

If that stupid electric car was drawing enough current to melt a 12 gauge extension cord.....its a wonder it didn't cause a fire in the house wiring, which is also normally # 12 romex.....some older homes could even have #14 wire which would be even more dangerous and more susceptible to igniting.....GM idiots

I didn't really think it was possible, but has anyone noticed that bravs has even less to say than usual lately?

Less ?.....making a fool out of you has become tiresome.......too easy.....besides, there is more to life than JPP, at least my life.

Now be sure not to address the issue we're talking about.....you obviously know shit about electricity.....
so talk about me....

Should I know about electricity? I don't know anything about electricity, at all. Nor would I ever claim to know a lot about it.

But, I know a lot about history. And I know that just about every new technology has been rife with failed tries during the inception & development phases. It's fairly ignorant to think otherwise.

And man, would I love to see a time when you emerged from your koolaid-drenched stupor to "make a fool" out of me. On what planet did that occur?
