Voters Must Sue Georgia So They Can Cast Ballots in Hot Governor’s Race

Allegations that Georgia’s Republican-led election officials are unfairly throwing out mailed ballots over hyper-technical errors are set to go before a federal judge two weeks before Election Day.

Hundreds -- perhaps thousands -- of ballots are being rejected because voters’ signatures don’t appear to match the ones on file, or because the voter oath is signed on the wrong line, two lawsuits claim. And would-be voters don’t get a chance to fix the errors or provide explanations, they say.

The practice adopted by Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp has a lopsided impact on likely Democratic voters, according to the lawsuits -- an allegation that carries extra significance because Kemp, a Republican, is running for governor on Nov. 6 in one of the nation’s most-watched races.

An Arkansas county temporarily closed most of its early voting sites after the Democratic nominee for secretary of state was left off the ballot, a glitch the candidate said left her in "sheer disbelief."

An official with the Garland County Election Commission said three of the county's four early voting sites were closed at times Monday because ballots did not include Susan Inman, the Democrat running for secretary of state. The sites have since re-opened.

Monday marked the start of early voting for Arkansas' Nov. 6 midterm election.

“I received a text from a friend who went to the early voting poll and said my name wasn’t on the ballot,” Inman said late Monday morning. “Of course I was in sheer disbelief.”

State GOP lawmakers are behind the passage of voter suppression laws in the first place and states across the country have passed measures targeting voters who tend to cast their ballots for Democrats. From onerous registration and voting requirements in Michigan aimed at college students and voter ID rules specifically “targeting African Americans with almost surgical precision” in North Carolina to strict ID requirements and limits on early voting days and locations impacting voters of color in Wisconsin, Republican state legislators have toiled tirelessly over the past decade to make voting more difficult in states all across the country.
